What's the drone license?
The drone license is a flight certificate issued by the RDW. This flight certificate is mandatory if you want to fly a drone that's heavier than 250g. You can request a drone license via the RDW and follow a drone course at an approved flight school. There are 2 types of flight certificates: sub category A1/A3 and sub category A2. If you don't fly your drone near people, sub category A1/A3 will do. That's called the 'certificate of competition of written exam'. Want to fly near people? You'll need the sub category flight certificate. This is the skill certificate.
What's the RDW?
The RDW is a Dutch organization that handles the registration of motorized vehicles and issues drone licenses and diver's licenses. Drones fall into the unmanned aircraft category and are registered by the RDW. You can request a drone license at the DW after you've successfully completed a drone course. Do you also have a drone that's heavier than 250g? You'll also have to request an operator number via the RDW. You have to use this number in the software of your drone. You can also put it on your drone with a sticker.
How do you request the drone license?
Did you successfully complete the drone course? You'll receive an email from the flight school with a unique link to the RDW. You can request your drone license via these link. You need a DigiD for this. After you've logged in, you'll see an overview of your certificates and a request to pay via iDeal. It costs € 10 to request a drone license. Once you've completed the payment, you'll receive your drone license via email. Keep the license safe somewhere and take it with you when you're going to fly the drone. Did you complete an A2 course as well? You'll receive another email from the flight school and go through the same steps to request the license.
