Expert review of the Samsung Odyssey G9 Neo

With a 49-inch screen size, this monitor is very impressive. The most noteworthy is the back of the monitor, which looks slightly sci-fi. The cover at the bottom covers the connectors and combines this with cable management. It's convenient to neatly store the cables with this large size. The curve in the screen is large enough to fit a mug under the screen. If this doesn't provide an immersive experience, I don't know what else will.

As a product editor, I work with many different windows and tabs open. On a 24-inch screen, I open a maximum of 2 windows next to each other. I double this on the 49-inch screen. The screen provides the same effect as 2 24-inch monitors next to each other, but without the bezel in the middle. Thanks to the curved screen, the distance between the image and my eyes is the same everywhere. I also have a clear overview of my work. I no longer have to switch between tabs or decide which one to open.

The Samsung Odyssey G9 Neo is a gaming monitor, so I couldn't wait to use it for gaming. Because I'm a big fan of open world and sandbox games, I opened GTA V. Santos offers a varied gaming world, which is perfect for the super ultrawideaspect ratio. After adjusting the field of view, I really felt like I was part of the game. The curved screen contributes to the experience and really pulls you into the action. For example, it actually seems like you're in the cockpit of a helicopter and fly to the horizon.

With a refresh rate of 240Hz, you can game with super fast images. Time to test this with a game of Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War. I'm not the best with shooters, but the 240Hz refresh rate does give me an advantage. The gameplay is incredibly smooth and is easy to adjust to. Unfortunately, the video card of my laptop isn't strong enough for a smooth 5K resolution. You need a really powerful video card for this, like the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 or AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT.

After all the gaming action, I like to highlight the graphic applications as well. Thanks to the 49-inch screen size, the monitor is large enough to open both Adobe Photoshop and InDesign next to each other. And you can edit ultrawide videos in Adobe Premiere just as easily. The local dimming on the screen improves black levels and makes it easier to work with more detail. I see exactly which pixel is darker than the other, and which one I have to adjust.
