How energy-efficient is an LED light?

There are many different types of lights on the market. We're happy to tell you about the 3 most common lights: incandescent, compact fluorescent, and LED lights. Which one's most efficient? We looked into it for you.

Energy-efficient lighting

The market is very saturated, so sometimes it's hard to see the forest for the trees. We understand. We're happy to tell you more about lights.

What's an LED light?

LED light energy-efficient

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. Without becoming too technical, it's good to know that a diode is an electrical component that contains 2 electrodes. Electrons run through it and that emits light. The main differences with traditional lights is that you won't lose any energy to heat with an LED light. This makes this light up to 90% more energy-efficient. The average use of a LED light is 6W.

LED light vs incandescent light bulb

LED light and incandescent light bulb energy-efficient

An incandescent light bulb emits light because the tungsten (the wire) heats up. This wire can become 3000°C. So a lot of energy gets lost on the heat of the wire. If you have 10 incandescent light bulbs, they use about 15% of your annual power consumption. So it's not very energy-efficient. An incandescent light bulb uses 60W on average.

LED light vs compact fluorescent light

compact fluorescent light energy-efficient

A compact fluorescent light is a lot more energy-efficient than an incandescent light bulb. You can recognize these lights from the tubes on the fitting. The advantage of a compact fluorescent light is that it lasts much longer than an incandescent light bulb. But LED is much more energy-efficient (and lasts much longer). A compact fluorescent light consumes about 8W. So an LED light is about 10% more energy-efficient.
