What's standby power and how do you prevent it?

Standby power is the consumption of a device when you're not using it. A few examples are a television in standby, your kettle in a socket, and a dishwasher that's hasn't been shut off. Today, we'll tell you what standby power is and how to detect it.

An average household has about 450kWh of standby power per year. That's about € 110 annually. But which devices cause this? Your television, the clock on your oven, your electric doorbell, the washing machine, and your sound system are examples of devices that consume power when you don't use them. Especially older devices use relatively a lot of power in standby. And that's a waste, of course.

By finding out which devices use energy when they're in stand by, you can easily reduce your own consumption. And you'll see the difference in your wallet. With some smart plugs, you can easily measure how much power the connected device consumes. With this, you can quickly find out which devices sneakily consume energy.

Now you now which devices increase your energy bill. You can do a few simple things to decrease this consumption. For example, a power strip with switch. With this, you can turn off multiple devices at the same time. For example, your television, soundbar, and media box. With a time or timer switch, you can easily set a schedule. A smart plug recognizes your consumption and adjusts the schedule accordingly. Or just pull the plug, for example the plug of your coffee machine.
