The two most important reasons are that: 1) the edges of the iPad are also protected and 2) it is better to use on your lap since the Apple Magic Keyboard is not stable (apparently) if it does not have a firm and flat surface (I often use my iPad on the couch). In addition, with the back cover you can choose how flat/upright you place the iPad.

It also has a few more advantages (see plus points). Finally, I also had good experiences with an earlier Logitech keyboard for an iPad and now (in use for about three weeks) the experiences are also fine.
