Brother MFCJ5740DW

All reviews are of course relative to what you may or may not be used to, but Printer received today, and already happy. Okay, at first it's a printer, of course, and it just seems to do that job. Prints come out pretty fast. However, I am pleasantly surprised with the scanning capabilities. The first thing that is great is being able to scan double-sided. This Brother scans both sides in one pass. Duplex is a little slower than normal scanning, which I feel is super fast. A stack of documents is read and scanned in no time. Also plenty of options to scan to. My previous HP Envy 7840 only allowed me to scan to USB; this Brother does that too, but can also e-mail scans to user-definable profiles for different users. I already saw that it can scan to FTP, but better still, it can just scan to a Network location. In other words, you create a folder on your NAS for the scans of this printer, you load a stack of papers, and in no time they are on your network where you can pick them up from your computer to process (e.g. in an administration program or archive). .

The printer was installed quickly. With the first prints I already saw lines in the prints (alignment?) and also misses (clogged printhead?), after cleaning and aligning several times it was slightly better, but still not perfect. Text looks a bit grainy compared to my 10-year-old Canon and is certainly not at the level of a laser printer. Photos are certainly OK, although many (photo) printers will do better. Don't forget that with A3 in the bottom drawer (and A4 in the top) the bottom drawer will protrude (at least 59cm depth needed), which will increase the already occupied space of this (large) printer. After much deliberation, this printer was chosen compared to its large and twice as expensive laser brother the MFC-L8690CDW, mainly because the functionalities are similar, but the running costs of the inkjet are much lower. So far no regrets.
