With the physical buttons on the handle, you can easily flip a page. With a weight of 215g, the Kobo Libra 2 weighs less than an average A5 notepad. Our expert review

A compact e-reader on which I read many e-books on the go.

  • Compact size
  • barely falters
  • Nice for my eyes
  • On the small side for larger font size

The Kobo Libra 2 is a nice e-reader with a handy size. With this compact device I can easily take thousands of e-books with me on holiday. Format The Kobo Libra 2 has a 7-inch screen, so I can easily hold it with one hand. Although the size is ideal when I take the e-reader with me on the train, for example, I find the screen a bit on the small side for comfortable reading. Now when I set a larger font size, I don't have a whole lot of text on my screen and have to scroll more often. The buttons on the case are very handy. I quickly flip through my book. The device is also quite fast for an e-reader, it barely stutters and even typing search terms is smooth. Kobo Plus I think a big advantage of a Kobo e-reader is that you have the option of taking out a Kobo Plus subscription. With this subscription I put all kinds of books on my e-reader. I then sync the device over WiFi. This works very fast and I don't have to use a laptop and cables. On vacation I devour a lot of books and with this subscription I am not afraid to run out of reading material. I cancel my subscription during periods when I have less time for reading. I simply put individual e-books on my e-reader via a cable. This also works without any problems, I drag the .epub file from my computer to my e-reader. When I unplug the e-reader, it imports the media very quickly and I can start reading right away. Nice for my eyes The Libra 2 has Comfortlight Pro. The e-reader automatically adjusts the color of the screen lighting to the time of day. During the day, the light is more blue, which keeps me alert. Because I have set my bedtime, the light becomes more and more orange as this time gets closer. Because of the warm light I still fall asleep without any problems, even though I still read in bed.

Fast e-reader with clear and sharp screen

  • super sharp screen
  • barely ghosting
  • fast refresh rate
  • no physical button for the lighting

This is my third e-reader, my previous one, the Kobo Glo, has been in service for eight years and actually still works but started to get some niggles. I have always missed physical scroll buttons on my previous e-reader, with this one I have them back. This makes it a bit bigger and bulkier, but that's not so much a disadvantage. You can comfortably hold the e-reader without putting your fingers on the screen. You can hold the screen in all directions, the text rotates with it. The screen orientation can also be locked if desired. The most important thing about an e-reader is of course the screen and you notice that a big step forward has been made in eight years. The screen is super sharp and the refresh rate is a lot faster than my old Kobo Glo. Ghosting (letters from a previous page lingering vaguely in the background) is virtually non-existent. The backlighting works well and nuances in color temperature are possible from white to some sort of yellow. You can set a sleep time, the e-reader will then slowly reduce the blue light until sleep time. The brightness of the lighting can be adjusted gradually enough. I do miss a physical button to turn the lighting on or off. The interface is exactly the same as all Kobos, there is not much new to tell. The interface speaks for itself, in the end you will mainly open and read books in practice. Classic things like choosing font and size, tracking reading progress and a dictionary are all included. You even have a dark mode where you get a black screen with white letters, which is new for Kobo. There is a link with the Kobo webshop, you can buy e-books directly on the device, but in practice this is much easier on a PC or tablet. You can synchronize e-books purchased on the Kobo store with your e-reader via WiFi. The same is possible with books purchased on Bol.com when you log in to the device with your Bol.com account. If you have different e-readers, you can synchronize your reading progress between the different devices. It is of course also possible to put separate Epub files on the device. I use the super handy and free software Caliber for this. A plus compared to the older Kobo devices is the USB-C connection. Now that the whole world has switched to USB-C, it was time that Kobo also followed suit, which already saves a charging cable. You have a generous 32GB of storage, which is probably enough for a lifetime of reading. The extra spacious storage space is mainly provided for audio books, but you can only buy it from Kobo itself and I have not tried it out. A smartphone seems more suitable for that to me, the range there is also much broader than just the Kobo store. The battery life, as we know from most e-readers, is okay. I'm on book three now and the battery is somewhere at 70%. When you listen to audiobooks, it undoubtedly goes a lot faster. I bought the e-reader with the accompanying cover. This protects the screen against pushing and dents from the outside, especially if you "drag" your e-reader everywhere, this is a must. The on button is on the back of the device near the flap of the cover, this is quite annoying, but you can set the e-reader to turn on and off automatically when opening and closing the cover. In combination with the cover, I find the device quite heavy compared to my old Kobo Glo, but it remains a lot lighter than, for example, a tablet. All in all, I am very pleased with my purchase and this e-reader is a big step forward compared to my eight-year-old Kobo Glo. Hopefully it will be enough for years of reading pleasure.
