Best reader in its class

  • Good screen resolution
  • Best price for a 7.8 inch
  • Nice buttons, are all customizable
  • Plastic frame/fragile build quality

I started using a Sony PRS-600 about 10 years ago. An excellent e-reader with many expansion options and a fantastic build quality. The Inkpad 3 is now my next purchase. Here's a comparison of what has changed in about 10 years. Important to mention is that the Inkpad 3 is the best value in its class. By 'class' I mean screen size in conjunction with the presence of physical buttons. You also notice that when you look further, because with every inch above 8, there seems to be an extra 100 euros to be settled, or with a few meaningless bells and whistles. This is how in general the market seems to work when you go for European, American and Canadian brands. The market for readers seems to be getting closer and closer. Manufacturers seem to be following each other when it comes to plastic materials, little to no expandability, and meager options. Sony has since stepped out and a number of large companies have obtained a semi-monopoly. This does not seem to have done the market much good. The screen resolution on the Inkpad 3 is indeed much better, but usually the older e-readers were perfectly legible. Where the Sony had a 600x800 resolution, the Inkpad 3 is equipped with an 1872x1404. Make no mistake, the buttons are extremely useful when using a reader. This makes the Inkpad 3 one of the best choices by far. Not only for browsing pages, but also because you can manually set the buttons to quickly open a certain function. The presence of physical buttons can therefore work to your advantage. Other eReaders skimp on this functionality with just a touch display. I'd leave that one aside for now. The build quality of the Inkpad 3 is abysmal. It feels plastic, wafer thin, fragile and breakable. This will not be different with the other readers. That said, my previous Sony had a significantly strong metal frame and you can feel the difference. It is therefore advisable to buy a cover, so that you are again 30 euros poorer. Pocketbook supplies the reader without a charger, but with a USB cable. A micro USB connection has been chosen, an older USB variant. That usually doesn't matter much in daily use. The offer to create multiple profiles is also very useful. This is useful if several people in the house are reading the reader and each want to use their own books/reading options. You can activate multiple profiles, which means that you end up in a separate reading environment with your own library. What would have been great in the age of social media are options to share excerpts from books to social media. The Inkpad 3 makes an attempt with some sharing options, such as sharing to Twitter, but that seems very limited and doesn't work well. It is also worth noting that you only get 32GB as an external expansion option. That seems like a lot, but if you consider that this is an investment for a longer period of time and you want to build up a book collection, including any audio books, over a long period of time, this can seem meager. Keep in mind that the omission of a charger, good expansion options, plastic housing, etc. have been conscious choices of the manufacturer. This will not be different with other manufacturers that move with the market to lower production costs. The screen size is excellent, the buttons are nice, the user profiles very useful and it reads .epubs (the format you mainly deal with) well.

Nice big screen

  • big screen

I am very happy with this e-reader. The screen is nice and large, so that a lot of text fits on it and you don't have to scroll so often. Extra useful if you read quickly and cannot make the letters very small because of reading glasses. The size is still manageable and fits well in my handbag. Previously I often read books on the i-pad, but it gets very warm from reading and the battery runs out quickly. The screen of the ereader is also much nicer. Even in the middle of the sun still a good picture. I borrowed an e-reader with a 6-inch screen for a while, but I kept browsing. The books from the library are easy to put on it. The internet doesn't work that fast on this e-reader, but that's a plus for me rather than a minus. Then I won't be tempted to go online while reading.

very good reader for a good price

always had kobo readers. Kobo's prices are rising faster than user profits. 280 euros for an 8 inch reader is not in proportion. pocket book is with the pricing of this 7.8 inch reader for 80 euros less favorable compared to the kobo 8 and 6.7 inch reader. if you have to choose now, choose the pocketbook!
