5 tips for a fresh bedroom

A good night's rest starts with a fresh bedroom. Wash your bedding weekly at a high temperature. Don't forget to fold your duvet over and open a window each morning. You can wash a down duvet, but do be careful. You can read how to keep your bedroom fresh in 5 steps below.

Get started with freshening up your bedroom

Fold laundry

With these tips you can get into a fresh bed every day:

  • Tip 1: Wash your bedding every week at 60°C
  • Tip 2: Fold your duvet over every morning and ventilate your room
  • Tip 3: Vacuum your matrass weekly and flip it 4 times a year
  • Tip 4: Clean your pillow 4 times per year
  • Tip 5: Put your stuffed toys in the washing machine or freezer every 6 weeks

Tip 1: wash bedding at 60°C

Wash bedding at 60°C

Wash your bedding like pillow cases, sheets, and duvet cover hygienically. Do so at 60°C. At this temperature, your washing machine removes most bacteria. It's best to wash your bedding every week. Or once every 2 weeks at the least. With a large washing machine, you have enough space for all your bedding. Choose a 9kg load capacity or more. Some washing machine have a steam function to remove allergens like pet hairs or dust mites. This way, you can wash extra thoroughly.

Tip 2: fold your duvet over and ventilate your room

Ventilate bedroom

Your bed is the favorite spot of the dust mite, which likes humid environments. That's why you should fold your duvet over every morning and open a window. Hang your duvet out of the window every week and wash it once a year. You can wash your down duvet with the delicate cycle at 40°c at most. Stick to the guidelines on the laundry label. Use a down detergent and avoid fabric softeners. Dry the duvet at the lowest setting and use dryer balls. Wait until its completely dry.

Tip 3: vacuum your matrass weekly

Freshen up bedroom

On average, a few million dust mites live in your matrass. They live off dander, of which we lose up to 40,000 particles per day. Use a matrass protector and wash it monthly at 60°C. Vacuum your mattress every week and flip it every few months. Flip it both vertically and horizontally. Brush baking soda over your mattress at least once a year, so it absorbs all the moisture. After a few hours, you can vacuum the soda again.

Tip 4: clean your pillow

Clean pillow

Clean your pillow about 4 times per year. You can wash synthetic pillows in the washing machine at 60°C. Use a little bit of detergent for delicate laundry. Dry your pillow at the lowest settings with the setting for wool or delicate laundry. Go to the drycleaner for a pillow with feathers. You can wash the interior of a latex pillow, so use a pillow protector under your pillow case. Another tip is to air it outside. If you have a pillow with memory foam, wash it by hand.

Tip 5: put stuffed toys in the washing machine or freezer

Wash your stuffed toys

If you have children, also clean their stuffed toys. Put all the toys in a laundry net and choose the cycle for delicate laundry. Choose a temperature of 30 or 40°C. Lay the toys on a laundry rack to dry, so don't put them in the dryer. This way, the plush bear or dog stays in shape. Wash delicate toys by hand and use detergent for delicate laundry. Another way is to put the toy inside a bag in the freezer for 24 hours. This kills all bacteria.
