How do you choose a smart thermostat?
Choose a thermostat
It's smart to take a photo of your heating system. Use the manual that was included with your boiler for the following steps. Most thermostats aren't suitable for all heating systems, so it's important you choose the right thermostat. We'll help you get started with the following questions:
- Do you have district heating?
- What kind of boiler do you have?
- Which thermostat do you save the most with?
District heating, heat pump, or boiler?
District heating
If you don't have a boiler at home, you have district heating. This is a general heating system that supplies to multiple households at the same time. That's why you don't have a boiler at home, but you do have pipes for heating. You can find these pipes near your fuse box. You need a district heating control set to connect your thermostat to district heating.
Boiler
If you have your own boiler, there are different types of thermostats that are suitable. A boiler has a type number, which you can use to find the (online) manual for your boiler. If you have a boiler, you need to answer a couple of additional questions to find the right smart thermostat.
Heat pump
A heat pump takes longer to heat up your house. Do you have a heat pump? Make sure to set a higher minimum temperature in the app of your smart thermostat. This prevents your house from cooling down too much. As a result, your heat pump will be on as little as possible, so you can save as much as possible.
Which thermostat works with my boiler?
Each boiler works with different thermostats. Before your purchase, check which boiler brand you have. We constantly monitor which boilers work well with our thermostats. For example, Bosch thermostats work well with Bosch, Nefit, and Radson boilers. And Nest thermostats work well with Intergas and Remeha. Tado thermostats work well with almost every brand. They also have radiator knobs that allow you to control each room separately.
How do I know which thermostat saves the most energy?
- Can you set zones individually? Some thermostats allow you to create zones in the house and adjust the heat per room. Go for thermostat knobs if you have radiators, and choose a regular thermostat for rooms with district heating.
- Does my thermostat work with the other products of my smart home platform? Check which smart platform you're using.
- Can I set time schedules? Some thermostats let you set the temperature per zone or room and per day.
