6 tips to deal with rising gas prices
Get started with saving
The gas prices are currently rising, because the gas reserves are depleting and we're using more and more energy. The government did provide a discount on gas, so the prices don't rise too fast. For people who use a lot of gas, the price does increase this way. We'll give you 6 tips so your energy price doesn't rise too much.
- Tip 1: Lower the heating
- Tip 2: Check your boiler
- Tip 3: Join Coolblue Energy
- Tip 4: Insulate your home
- Tip 5. Don't cover the radiator
- Tip 6. Ventilate as efficiently as possible
Tip 1: lower the heating
The heating is the biggest reason for a higher energy bill. Turn it off in the summer when you're not there, or turn off the radiators in rooms where you don't go often. You'll save € 180 on average per year if you set your thermostat to 15°C at night. Keep in min that you also lower the temperature of your floor heating to 17°C, because the floor heating doesn't heat up as fast. If you don't want to adjust the temperature every day, consider a smart thermostat that does the work for you.
Tip 2: vent your heating
Have your boiler checked by a professional mechanic once every 2 years. You can't tinker with the boiler yourself, but you can vent the radiators. Set your heating to the lowest setting on the thermostat and your radiators. Twist the valve on the side of the radiator open when the radiator is fully cooled down. Make sure you hold a cloth under the valve. Next, check if the water pressure of the boiler is between 1.5 and 2 bar. Otherwise, go through this step again to make sure you consume less.
Tip 3: join Coolblue Energy

Tip 4: insulate your home
A fully insulated house can save up to € 600 per year compared to a home with only double-paned windows and roof insulation. From 24 January 2022, the government subsidizes 30% of the costs of insulation. The costs of insulation depend on the house. The complete insulation of a townhouse currently costs about € 5880, and a freestanding home of the same size costs € 10,640.
Tip 5: don't cover the radiator
If you use radiators to heat your home, you can choose which rooms you heat. This way, you save energy by not heating the whole home. Make sure there's no furniture in front of the radiator and that there are no curtains in front of it. They block the heat. You can use the radiator even more effectively if you hang heat-reflecting foil behind the radiator. This really keeps all the heat in.
Tip 6: vent as effectively as possible
You have to keep your doors and windows closed as much as possible, but you also need oxygen. That's why you should open the self-regulating window vents above your window. If you don't have these, open the windows when you briefly leave your home for groceries, for example. Consider a carbon monoxide detector so you know when to open the window for the best air quality.
