What's the difference between parallel and series-connected solar panels?
What's the difference?
Series-connected solar roof
A series-connected solar roof is a series of solar panels that we connect in a circuit. We call this a string. The power that the panels generate together goes to 1 central inverter. This inverter converts the solar power into power that you can use for your cooktop or washing machine.
What is a parallel-connected solar roof?
Compared to a series-connected solar roof, each panel on a parallel-connected solar roof has its own inverter. We call this a micro inverter. This inverter converts solar power into power right away, which goes to your fuse box. As a result, each panel generates its own solar power.
Pros and cons
Series-connected solar roof
A series-connected solar roof is a good choice if your roof isn't in the shade often. Because you need 1 central inverter, the systems are also more affordable than parallel-connected roofs.
- Best choice for a roof with lots of sun.
- The system is more affordable.
- The central inverter takes up more space.
Parallel-connected solar roof
If you have lots of shade on your roof, we recommend a parallel-connected roof. Thanks to the micro inverters, the solar roof still generates lots of power. Even when a panel is in the shade. A parallel-connected solar roof with micro inverters for every panel is more expensive, but it does yield more.
- Best choice for a roof with lots of shade.
- We install the micro inverters behind the panels, so you don't have to mount an inverter in your home.
- The system is more expensive.
More benefits of parallel-connected
We almost always recommend a parallel-connected roof. This method has even more advantages:
- A parallel solar roof performs better. If 1 panel malfunctions, it doesn't affect the rest of your solar roof. The rest of the panels still generate the maximum power.
- Micro inverters have a longer lifespan. They last an average of 25 years. On average, you replace a central inverter after 10 or 15 years.
- A solar roof with micro inverters generates power faster. Because the inverters are smaller, they have a shorter boot time. So, you can generate power earlier and faster when the sun is shining.
