How do you solve a too high voltage on your solar panels?
What happens when the AC power is too high?
The solar panels on your roof generate direct current. An inverter then turns this into alternating current. You can use this for your washing machine or return it to the power grid. The voltage of the power grid is 230W with a margin of 10%. This is determined by the Dutch grid code. This means that the AC power is at least 207V and at most 253V. Is the voltage higher? This shortens the lifespan of your washing machine, TV, or dishwasher. That's why te inverter automatically switches off, so you temporarily don't generate power. As soon as the voltage is back to normal, the inverter switches on again.
Why does the inverter switch off?
The voltage on the power grid is always changing. For example, we consume more power when we get up or come home than when we're outside on a sunny Saturday afternoon. In addition, the energy is generated by green energy sources like solar panels or windmills. When there's more demand than supply, the voltage increases. The power grid isn't able to handle that. That's when the inverter switches off to prevent your solar panels or appliances from damaging and malfunctioning.
How do you solve this?
You can solve this problem in several ways:
- Do you live in a neighborhood with newly built homes, or do you have many neighbors with solar panels? There's a good chance that the power grid can't handle the amount of power. Contact your network supplier so they're aware of the problem.
- Does your energy supplier need a peak voltage report? Please contact us so we can create it for you.
- Are you unsure about the installation of your solar panels due to cables that are too long, for example? Please contact us.
You can increase the maximum voltage of your inverter. We don't recommend this, as this is punishable according to the Dutch grid code. In addition, the warranty on your inverter will be void.
What are the plans for the future?
The government and energy suppliers are aware of the problem. Though it's not common that your solar panels switch off, energy suppliers are investing a lot in a better power grid. That way, you'll be less bothered by high AC power and your inverter won't switch off as easily. If you want to save energy, solar panels are still a good and sustainable choice.
