Pros and cons

According to our camera lens expert
  • You can take clear photos in low light thanks to the low aperture of f/2.8.
  • The built-in image stabilization reduces motion blur.
  • With the aperture ring on the lens, you can easily and quickly adjust the aperture.
  • The lens doesn't have an internal zoom, so you can't zoom as easily when you record with a gimbal.

Description

The Sony FE 16-25mm f/2.8 G is a compact wide-angle zoom lens for your Sony full-frame mirrorless camera. It has a wide image angle of 16 to 25mm. This makes the lens suitable for landscape and architecture photography, for example. You can also record or vlog with this lens. This way, you capture yourself and your surroundings at the same time. Thanks to the low maximum aperture of f/2.8, you take bright photos with little light. This allows you to photograph the setting sun at the beach, for example. The built-in image stabilization reduces motion blur if you take photos with low shutter speeds. This results in sharp photos in the dark. You can also record stable footage by hand. With the aperture ring on the lens, you can quickly adjust the aperture. That's useful if the lighting conditions change fast.

A solid lens suitable for many applications

  • Beautiful bokeh
  • Fast accurate autofocus
  • Suitable for many purposes
  • Supplied without protective bag

Last two weeks I had the opportunity to extensively test this lens. The lens is relatively light and certainly feels solid, as I have come to expect from Sony lenses. The ring for manual focusing and the ring for manually changing the aperture are very smooth and almost silent.
The lens is suitable for many purposes. Because the lens has a wide angle of up to 16 mm, you can take excellent wide landscape photos with it. If you want to capture subjects with it, you can take photos with beautiful bokeh, since the aperture of the lens can be opened up to F/2.8. This is especially evident when taking portrait photos, where you want to make the person stand out from the photo with a blurred background.
I have also used the lens to capture moving subjects. The autofocus does an excellent job, especially in combination with the autofocus of my camera. The lens also does not disappoint when making videos. Switching between subjects is lightning fast and the lens is completely silent.
Finally, I tried to take macro photos with the lens by photographing flowers. It takes some practice, but the lens is certainly suitable for this too, allowing you to photograph your subject from very close up.
Are there any downsides to this lens at all? What disappoints me a bit is that the lens comes without a protective cover/bag. Considering the purchase price and the fact that this lens is part of Sony's G-series lenses, I expected that they would add this.

super lens, but not suitable with gimbal

  • quality photos
  • little light, still quality
  • works less with gimbal

I have a Sony A7r camera that I am completely in love with. Until now I mainly took portrait photos and only had the corresponding lens. But I also thought it would be fun to photograph landscapes. I have scheduled a course for this, but you also need the right lens. This wide-angle lens is perfect for photographing landscapes and buildings. Even in low light you can still take excellent photos, this is due to the low aperture. What I do think is a disadvantage: I like to film using a gimbal, which I enjoy. However, this lens does not have a built-in zoom. This does make it more difficult to work with a gimbal, so think carefully about this before purchasing this lens. Otherwise a good lens.

Beautiful image quality

  • Compact
  • light
  • Nice image quality
  • No lens case

I have been using this lens for several weeks now in combination with my Sony A7 III, and I am very satisfied. The lens is light and compact, making it ideal to take with you on trips or on holiday. Unfortunately it comes without a bag or case, but luckily it fits perfectly in my camera backpack.

The autofocus is fast and delivers 30 fps in burst mode. The aperture is easy to set and lock. In addition, the lens is quiet and has a high light output, resulting in beautiful images. So far I've used it for architectural and interior photography, as well as videos for a real estate site. I have not been able to detect any distortion in the images. In short, I am very satisfied with this lens and can definitely recommend it.
