Bose QC 45: clear and detailed sound

  • Rock-solid noise canceling
  • Clear, detailed sound
  • Beautiful design
  • Doesn't dampen wind

We've been waiting for it for a long time, but the Bose QuietComfort 45 is finally here. The noise canceling headphones have few new functions, but build on the top-class quality that its predecessor also had. I just don't think the headphones are suitable for every music genre.

Closed off from the world
When I listen to music at normal volume and switch on the noise canceling, I no longer hear anything from my surroundings. The noise canceling is so strong that I fully focus on the music or what I'm doing. All possible distractions around me are shut out, except for the wind. Unfortunately I can hear it loudly through the sound. I don't always have to be completely closed off and I would like it if I could set the noise canceling in the Bose Music app. This is unfortunately not possible, I only choose between noise canceling on or off.

Clear and detailed sound
In the sound, especially the medium and high tones are beautifully reproduced. This ensures a very clear and detailed sound. These headphones come into their own, especially in music genres with a lot of vocals and instruments. I would not recommend these headphones for music where bass predominates. The bass lacks too much punch for that.

design
In terms of design, the headphones are very similar to its predecessor, but I think the QC 45 is finished slightly better. The matte black color also gives the headphones a slightly more luxurious look. In addition, the light weight, the deep and soft ear cups and the leather headband ensure a high wearing comfort.

The competitor gives better quality for this price.

  • Ultimate Sound Isolation
  • Neutral music sound without boosted bass
  • Light and comfortable to wear
  • Durability earcups

My first experience with the QC15 was a relief at the time. It was a unique product that really helped keep out ambient noise. This QC45 actually still is and then expanded with bluetooth and microphone.

The reasons I'm not positive about the QC45 are the poor quality of the ear cups and the competition from Sony. There is probably rubber in the ear cups and after a year they start to decompose. The rubber is affected by the fat in the skin and then they have to be replaced. They are very soft and therefore provide excellent passive isolation of the mid and high tones. The low tones are well damped by the noise canceling.

I have worn several QCs and have been using the Sony WH-1000XM3 for several years now. It shows virtually no wear. I've also been using the WH-1000XM4 for a while and I think it's equivalent.

The differences between these 3 (QC45, WH-1000XM3 and WH-1000XM4) are small. The QC45 is more careful with the bass and if you don't mind replacing the ear cups every now and then, they're great headphones with the best noise canceling available.

Great as a successor to the Bose QC35 II

  • Improved Noise Canceling (compare to QC35 II)
  • Bose Sound Signature (must like)
  • Bluetooth 5.1 (day and night difference with the QC35 II)
  • Wearing comfort as yet less than QC35 II

I've had the pleasure of a Bose QC35 II for 4 years, so my review is based on the comparison between my previous QC35 II / current QC45.

Due to a change of job I had to return the QC35 II to my former employer after 4 years of intensive use... very cool to pass that on to another employee, but oh well. Because I have used the headphones for a few thousand hours in that period, I can make a pretty good comparison between the two models.

What has remained the same:
* conveniently foldable and with high-quality hinges and compact to store in a practical case (unlike Apple);
* flawless multipoint pairing, THE reason not to choose the Sony from the same price range - the Bose works excellently with both Android and Apple devices.

What has improved :
* the Noise Canceling is really extremely good, although I read that more recent / more expensive headphones do even better in that area;
* I personally think the sound has improved, but that's personal, I like the Bose sound signature. Our 2 cars also have a Bose audio system on board with resp. 9 and 11 speakers - sometimes I drive around a small block when a nice song is being played;
* Bluetooth 5.1 : The range in and around the house is really at least double than the QC35 II.

What is less good :
* for the time being, the wearing comfort feels a lot less than the QC35II - I experience more pressure on my ears, although it may also be that it all has to "settle", I literally barely felt the QC35II;
* pity that the ANC is now only On / Off, the QC 35II gave an intermediate option "Low".

What still has to prove itself :
* the battery life : after 4 years with the QC35II it was still fine after xxx charging cycles;
* the quality : you could see signs of use on the ear cups of the QC35 II, but it was not torn or broken, I thought it was really remarkable.

The Bose QC45 should hold its own here between AirPods Pro and Shure 535, and it does a great job. If the price tag doesn't stop or deter you, I would advise you to test them at least once, the Coolblue stores are very helpful in that.
