Product description

The Ubiquiti UniFi USW-FLEX 3-Pack is a set of 3 compact network switches from Ubiquiti. With this small UniFi switch, you quickly get fast network ports for at home or the office. The switches have a PoE-input, so it's sufficient to just connect to a PoE network connection. The UniFi Flex then has network and electricity right away. Once set up, you can configure the switches via the UniFi controller software or app. That way, you can adjust the settings of the other switches and UniFi access points in your network.

Good switch with many functions

  • PoE
  • Many advanced features
  • Status LED can be turned off
  • LEDs are bright

The Unifi Switch 8 is a good switch with many options. It can be used on PoE and can also pass PoE via port 8. Something that is not indicated in many places is that the switch does not need to be powered via PoE to output PoE on port 8. This can be turned on via the device specific settings in the controller software.

In my case, the switch is behind the modem of the provider to provide more internet ports in my room. Here the switch is hung under my desk. It quickly became apparent that the LEDs were very bright. Especially the status LED. I quickly turned this off as this is disturbing in a bedroom.

The PoE on port 8 is used to power an access point (Ubiquity's UAP-AC-PRO). All this is controlled by the ubiquity cloud key gen 2. With the control software on the cloud key (can also be installed on a computer) you can set many advanced functions on the switch. Unfortunately, you need a USG (Unifi Security Gateway) for many of these functions.

Ubiquiti is fantastic material

  • Real switch that does not send its packets over all ports but to the correct port. You can see that in the lights.
  • Quite pricey

Ubiquiti is really good stuff. I already have nano beamers, Access points and now the switch. everything is configurable (if it is unifi) via a unifi app. It is very good material.

No socket required for switch and access point

  • Power over Ethernet Pass-through
  • Optional magnetic mount
  • Pay close attention to PoE budgets

This switch had to provide an access point with Ethernet and power on a cupboard on the first floor, and connect it to the Ethernet on the ground floor and attic, without having a socket available itself. To be able to do that, you have to look closely at the datasheets for the number of watts you can send (for example to a Unifi AP6 Lite).
PoE (802.3af) - 8W
PoE+ (802.3at) - 20W
PoE++ (802.3bt) - 48W

So if you connect it to a Unifi Dream Router, you can only power that device, not another access point. But it works fine together with, for example, a Unifi Switch Lite 8 PoE.

If you would like to hang this in a bedroom, keep in mind that you need something made of black tape to block the light from the network connection LEDs, because you cannot turn that off via the software.
