Description

Don't just move more, move smarter with the Fitbit Charge 4 Black. The tracker measures the intensity of your workout based on your heart rate zone. You'll be able to see at a glance whether you've already followed the World Health Organization's advice to exercise 150 minutes in moderate intensity or 75 minutes in high intensity every week. The Fitbit community motivates you, as you can earn badges, share statistics with friends, and compete in challenges. During a run, the Charge 4 registers your distance, speed, and route thanks to the integrated GPS receiver. That means you'll no longer need to bring your smartphone. You can also receive notifications from your smartphone, measure your sleep, and make contactless payments via Fitbit Pay.

Compatibility

In order to use the Charge 4, you need an Android smartphone with Android version 7 or higher. Do you have an iPhone? You need an iPhone 5s or newer with iOS version 11 or higher. The Charge 4 doesn't work in combination with Huawei smartphones.

Sleep stages and sleep score

You can easily wear the watch at night. The sleep mode of the watch dims the display and stops responding to movements. You'll also no longer receive notifications. In the morning, you'll receive a report in the app. You can see how long you were in each sleep phase and what your sleep score is. You'll also receive tips for a better night's sleep.

Contactless payment with Fitbit Pay

If you're going to a bootcamp class, you can leave your phone and wallet at home. Afterwards, you'll be able to buy a bottle of water with your watch via Fitbit Pay. Check whether your bank supports the mobile payment service Fitbit Pay under the 'required bank account'.

Note: you won't receive a connector. Do you want to charge the watch via a power outlet? Use the power adapter of your phone charger or order a charger adapter.

This watch is suitable for a wrist circumference of 15 to 17cm.

Comprehensive activity tracker for this price point!

  • Fitbit community motivates me
  • Contactless payment nice in corona time
  • Measure active minutes based on intensity
  • GPS not so accurate and drains battery

I've wanted to live healthier for a while, but in times of corona this turns out to be a challenge. That's why, as a kid, I was so happy to test the Fitbit Charge 4 Rosewood (purple). As far as I'm concerned, the tracker is great at encouraging a healthy lifestyle. From the exercise goals & reminders, to the community that motivates me with healthy recipes, before and after photos and achievements. Just scroll through the Fitbit feed and I'm excited to get started!

Measurements:
The sleep measurement shows my sleep score, estimated oxygen variation (useful if you think you have sleep apnea) and sleep phases. I notice that I am starting to behave towards the sleep score. A bad night according to Fitbit and I suddenly feel a lot more tired. The positive effect is that I go for a good score the next night and go to bed earlier. I find the measurement of active minutes very innovative. 150 minutes of physical activity every week, as the WHO recommends, is certainly a challenge now, but Fitbit measures more intense activity twice. This way I get the exercise advice faster.

Functions:
The Charge 4 has a GPS receiver, an exception for a tracker within this price point! Unfortunately, the GPS was not very accurate. I would regularly skate next to the street. A shame, but not dramatic, because I especially like GPS to view and share my route and distance. The GPS is good enough for this. Contactless payment is certainly useful in times of our one and a half meter society. The installation took a while though. Apparently I had to look up my card number in my ABN internet banking, but this was not clearly indicated. To control music I need a Spotify Premium account and I don't have one.

Fit:
I absolutely had to get used to the hardness of the strap, but in the end I was even able to sleep with it. I have narrow wrists of 15 centimeters in circumference and the tracker did not fit everywhere. A woven strap would have been better for me, but it only comes with the special editions. What strikes me is that there is some space at the connection of the strap. The strap just doesn't connect completely to the case and this makes the whole look a little less tight. Still, the simple design - which is almost identical to the design of its predecessor, the Charge 3 - still appeals to me.

Battery:
The battery lasted me about 5.5 days. I wore the Charge 4 day and night and did a total of 2 short 30 minute workouts. I do notice that the GPS is draining battery. Every hour of GPS costs the battery 23 percent. You will not save a marathon or triathlon with it. 5 to 10 km run for sure! I had to pinch my eyes to read the screen in sunlight, but it's easy to read in all other weather conditions. Charging my empty Fitbit took 1.5 hours. This was in the socket with adapter. Correctly!

Community:
As far as I'm concerned, a big advantage of Fitbit is the Fitbit community. Here I share my activities, photos, earned badges and more. The 'high fives' (Fitbits likes) I received motivated me enormously to continue this healthy lifestyle. I've also joined groups so that I receive relevant posts on my Fitbit feed in the app. For example, I've joined the Vegetarians (I'm not, but for inspiration) and Yoga. There is something for everyone: from groups for new mothers to groups for fit seniors.

Not suitable for the multi-athlete.

  • Nice design for a fitness tracker compared to other brands/types.
  • Fairly user-friendly and intuitive.
  • Sleep tracking useful for better insight, but not always accurate.
  • Everything has to be set up and viewed via the App. Virtually no information and no options on the watch itself.

If you have no experience with fitness trackers yet, this is a nice gadget. The GPS in the Fitbit Charge 4 at this price is a plus. The GPS is in my experience quite accurate.

Furthermore, the Fitbit has disappointed me in many areas, especially compared to other fitness trackers in the same price category. If you are a (relatively) avid athlete, do more than 6 different sports and want detailed data, then I don't recommend the Fitbit Charge 4.

Cons:
* Only 6 types of training can be set on the watch via the App. If you do many different sports, this watch is too limited. Available sports eg. Walking, running, outdoor cycling, outdoor activity, yoga, swimming, spinning, mountain bike, aerobics, cross trainer.
* Watch should recognize activities automatically. In any case, they are not visible on the watch itself. The App has sometimes given a message about an automatically recognized activity, but if you click on more info, the training/activity is nowhere to be found.
* Watch cannot be synchronized with the App without internet. Other brands of watches in the same price category can. I really think the Fitbit Charge 4 is an essential miss. Especially if you like holidays where you don't always have internet available every day, the Fitbit Charge 4 is an absolute no go.
* Hardly any data can be read on the watch. Previous workouts cannot be viewed on the watch. Only in the App after synchronization.
* Only the alarm clock can be set on your watch. All other data that you want/need to set must be arranged via the App, while other brands in the same price category offer much more options in that area.
* Battery life is disappointing. A maximum of 3 - 4 hours with GPS is really not an exaggeration. A normal working day with a workout at the end barely saves it with battery life.
* Not suitable for detailed swim training. Single number of jobs and total time. No heart rate, no time per lane, SWOLF, beat recognition, etc.
* No outdoor swimming mode.
* When using "outdoor training", the watch does not register distance, speed and route if you fall below 4 to 5 km/h. Is therefore not suitable for slow outdoor sports such as swimming, supping or canoeing against the wind, etc.
* No countdown timer or stopwatch available in training mode. Well, if you don't have training mode on. In my opinion illogical and other similar fitness trackers can.
* Watch irritates. The bulge on the back is thicker than most other fitness trackers. This is the first tracker that I actually feel on a daily basis that I have it on, which leaves a mark on my wrist and therefore feels annoying.
* Screen is very scratch sensitive. No tracker has ever been damaged on me. With this screen, a light touch with an object is enough for considerable damage.
* Often takes 30 sec to a minute before your GPS is connected. I don't think it's a Fitbit specific issue. Have experienced that with similar watches as well.
* Stairs doesn't count well, but that is also the case with other trackers.

Advantages:
* I find the Charge 4 very intuitive to use. The App not always. Some things often have to search again for a long time.
* GPS in watch, so you no longer have to take your phone with you to track your training route.
* It is a nice little watch, great for small wrists and in my opinion the most beautifully designed of the trackers in this price category.
* There are loose straps available that allow you to alternate and give it a more "chic" look.
* Sleep registration seems reasonably good and is nice to provide insight into your quality of sleep.
* The feature that I find most distinctive on the Fitbit Charge 4 from equivalent trackers is the “Movement incentives” feature. The tracker very much motivated me with “movement stimuli” to take a minimum number of steps every hour. You can set yourself how many steps per hour you want to take and which hours per day and which days you want the movement incentives on. The Fitbit does this very well compared to other trackers that usually only focus on overall results throughout the day.
* Easy registration of water intake in the App is nice. It is a pity that this is not also possible via the watch and is not visible on the watch.

TOP!

  • Battery
  • Easy to connect with the app

The battery life is really great, I've been using it for 6 days now without charging. All functions work well, only the stairs and pedometer are sometimes not accurate.
