A sharp bright bokeh hero
- Bokeh, so a nice blurred background
- Bright, so there is always enough light
- The autofocus is fast and always on point
- A bit on the heavy side

According to our camera lens expert
Take detailed portrait photos with the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM lens. The lens is suitable for Canon mirrorless cameras with an RF mount. The maximum aperture of f/1.2 creates a blurred background, emphasizing the sharp eyes of your model even more. This large aperture makes the lens light-sensitive and suitable to take sharp photos in dark locations. The 50mm focal length is comparable to the perspective of the human eye. For example, you can record street scenes or take documentary photos with it. The design is splash and dust proof, which makes the lens suitable to take with you in nature. With the Lens Control Ring you can adjust various settings, such as aperture, shutter speed, or ISO. You decide which setting you link to this.

I prefer to use a 50mm lens on my Canon EOS R. The neutral angle of view of this lens most closely resembles that of the human eye. As a result, I do not suffer from strange distortions. That's why it makes the ideal portrait lens for me. That way I don't suffer from strange distortions. Until now I always used the compact 50mm f/1.8, which I shot great portraits with. But now I've decided to upgrade to the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM. And that is good. My photos are sharper and the background blur is even softer thanks to the f/1.2 aperture. Format The Canon RF 50 mm f/1.2 takes some getting used to for me when I take it out of the box. This lens is a lot bigger and heavier than the f/1.8 version. That meant a bit more lugging, but I'm used to that by now. The lens feels very solid and is comfortable to hold. I also feel that this lens can take a beating better, so I can take it with me without any worries. Diaphragm The f/1.2 aperture of this lens makes it a joy to shoot with. In dark situations I don't have to increase my ISO value to an extreme to take a well-exposed photo. But most importantly is the buttery smooth bokeh this lens creates. When making a portrait I prefer to focus on the eyes. Then I open the aperture all the way to f/1.2, so that you only focus on the eyes. This way I completely separate the person portrayed from the background. That's where this lens really shines. Autofocus When I work with a shallow depth of field, it is especially important that the autofocus does what I want. With this 50mm lens, I don't worry about the autofocus at all. It focuses quickly and well on the point where I aim the camera. This way I can easily make razor-sharp portraits.

Beautiful but heavy and above all large lens. For me as a professional it is a question of doubt. The lens is awkwardly large. And because the brightness is so high, the image through the viewfinder is out of focus, except for the focus point/area. With a 1.8 lens, you have significantly less trouble with this. All in all, I've had the lens in packaging for a few days because I'm considering sending it back more often. The lens is super sharp. At large apertures, the focus is really on a subject. Very nice for some subjects. For example for a half-total portrait. But for almost all other subjects you often want more sharpness. Which is of course also possible with this lens. At 2.8 it becomes a completely different story, a beautiful sharpness and a very nice blur. All in all, a difficult choice, because RF 50mm 1.8 is also very good. Certainly at 5.6 or 8. And due to its compactness, it is much easier to carry and use for a very wide range of everyday subjects.

After 12 years of 5D mK II switched to R6. On the 5D, I shot 75% with the 35mm f/1.4L. After long hesitation, I went for the rf 50 mm f/1.2L. The 28-70 f/2.0 is too heavy, the 24-70 (EF version) I always found soft and 'characterless'. The sharpness of this lens at 1.2 is really incredible, bokeh, contrast and color also great. I had hoped that it could also replace my EF 85mm F/1.2L, that seems to be a point of doubt (and the RF version is priceless). But as an all-round lens really great (and you get strong shoulders and arms)
