--- Design en bouwkwaliteit
Zoals gezegd, het is een pronkstuk. Uniek in zowel zijn looks als in zijn duurzaamheid. Hij voelt ook zeer degelijk aan, met een robuuste en zware bouwkwaliteit. Niks op aan te merken. De kwaliteit van de onderdelen op zich laat echter wel te wensen over. Het contragewicht is matig afstelbaar en het lijkt, net als bij het draaimechanisme van de arm, alsof er veel interne wrijving is. Hierdoor voelt het nooit alsof je het naaldelement spot on hebt afgesteld.
Voor dit naaldelement is het nodig de anti-skating op 2,5 in te stellen, maar dit zorgde ervoor dat de arm en de naald het einde van de plaat niet konden halen. Ik moest de anti-skating terugdraaien naar ongeveer 1,2 en dat kan niet de bedoeling zijn!
De metalen plaat liep bovendien met een merkbare golf, wat de kwaliteit van de muziek nooit ten goede kan komen.

--- Gebruiksgemak
Dit is een prima platenspeler om mee te beginnen. Hij is voorzien van een headphone jack en een phono amp (dus direct aan te sluiten op de versterker!). Alhoewel er slechts twee afspeelsnelheden zijn, zonder pitch, zal dit genoeg zijn voor de meesten. Daarnaast is het geen automatische arm, maar dat is natuurlijk geen vereiste.
Een érg groot gemis vond ik het ontbreken van een plastic cover. Deze is vervangen door een cover van stof. Dit past natuurlijk in de duurzame visie van House of Marley, maar het voelt bepaald niet stofvrij en soms wat tricky om iets over de platenspeler heen te trekken.

Geluidskwaliteit
Puur gekeken naar de kwaliteit van het geluid dat de Stir It Up produceert, werd ik erg positief verrast. Het is een volle, accurate weergave van de muziek. Er is veel detail en diepte te bekennen en het Audio Technica element doet zijn naam dus eer aan. Echt goed.
Tegelijkertijd ligt hier ook hét zwakste punt van deze platenspeler: de belt drive. De metalen plaat wordt aangestuurd met een rubberen bandje en in deze prijsklasse zorgt dat wel eens voor een verstoord tempo van de muziek. Bij deze platenspeler leek het alsof er nooit een constante RPM van 33⅓ werd behaald, maar een schommeling tussen 33 en 34 RPM. Dit betekent dat er een soort 'warp' in de muziek zit. En hoe goed de kwaliteit dan ook moge zijn, als het nummer niet klopt, dan valt er wat mij betreft niet naar te luisteren. Alle voorgaande gebreken waren voor mij geen reden om de platenspeler terug te sturen. Daarvoor is hij simpelweg te mooi! Helaas gooit de warp flink roet in het eten. Ik moet er wel bij zeggen dat ik een absoluut gehoor heb én een flinke audiofiel ben, waardoor ik dit soort distorties zeker sneller oppik dan de gemiddelde luisteraar. Dus bepaal voor jezelf hoe erg je dit vindt.

De prijs-kwaliteitverhouding is wat moeilijk te bepalen. Het ligt er volledig aan wat je zoekt in je (eerste?) platenspeler.

Want als je op zoek bent naar een perfect betrouwbare weergave en een goed gemonteerde platenspeler, dan vind je die hier niet.
