Super all-rounder in the APS-C segment

  • loads of functionality, just like X-T3
  • sharp kit lens
  • handy size to take with you on a trip
  • Big hands? Then X-T3 is a more comfortable option

After months of reading reviews and considering, I made the switch to Fuji, despite the fact that I actually had the intention of purchasing a full-frame camera. The X-T30 has almost all the functionality of its brother the X-T3, except for example the double card slot, a slightly smaller EVF, no weather sealing and no 4K 60fps but still 4K 30fps video. Not extremely important to me, so that saved difference from the X-T3, which I also had on it, goes to extra accessories such as lenses.

Despite all the reviews and user experiences I read about the camera, it completely overwhelmed me the first day with all its functionalities - especially compared to my old Nikon D80. It is therefore not a bad idea to take a look at the videos on Youtube about how others set up their cameras. The camera already works very well out of the box, but to really get the most out of your camera, you should first play with the functionalities and shortcuts in, for example, the Quick menu and the display options of the EVF.

If you don't feel like thinking for a while - all those possible functionalities can seem really overwhelming - you can always switch on the AUTO mode. Although I haven't really used it myself yet.

People with large hands will find the camera just a little too small, but it's perfect for my hands. The camera also feels very solid to me.

There is so much to say about this camera, but what I especially love is the EYE&FACE autofocus where the camera automatically tries to focus on the eyes or face of people. In addition, the focus peak is very useful to see whether the camera has really focused on the subject correctly (it is a kind of zoom-in functionality) and similar functionality when working with manual lenses. I also find the color rendering of Fuji slightly better than my Nikon as standard.

The lens is sublime as a kit lens. Solidly built, light, fast AF and sharp. For traveling, the extra "reach" of an 18-135mm is more convenient, but you won't hear me complaining. I may consider the 55-200mm for the future.

It is a bit of a shame that the X-T30 and its brother do not have In-Body Stabilization, but Fuji also has a reasonable number of lenses with OIS on board, just like this kit lens.

What I did notice is that the Fuji photos in Lightroom (LR) look less beautiful than in Capture One (Express and Pro). Especially the sharpening tool in LR - despite improvements - leaves a lot to be desired. Capture One offers a free (!) Express of their editing software for Fuji raws which is well worth checking out. Especially if you work a lot with the RAW format instead of the JPGs.

For me, this camera price/quality in the mirrorless segment is a super all-rounder and (according to other reviews) it is about the same height as the new Sony A6400, which was my other possible choice.

The X-T30 kit is highly recommended.

Don't save on the memory card and definitely take a fast SDXC card such as Sandisk Xtreme pro, especially if you regularly shoot videos and/or in continuous burst mode. And it might not be a bad idea to have a spare battery on hand when you're out and about
