Pros and cons

According to our powerline adapter expert
  • You can create a WiFi hotspot and wirelessly connect your devices to your network.
  • The adapter has 2 network ports to connect devices wired.
  • At a speed of 500Mbps, the powerlines are suitable for streaming HD films and interactive TV.
  • The adapters don't have a built-in socket to connect another device to.
  • Powerline adapters with a Fast Ethernet port are 10 times slower than adapters with Gigabit Ethernet.
  • The maximum speed of powerline adapters depends on the AC power in your house, as unearthed sockets provide a lower speed and you can't plug a powerline into a power strip.

Description

The TP-Link TL-WPA4221 Starter Kit is a set of 2 compact powerline adapters that uses the power grid in your home to create a computer network. With the WiFi clone button, you can copy the name and password of your wireless network at the push of a button. Plug the powerline adapters into the socket and easily share an internet connection with other floors, or just with the other side of the room.

Note: you need to connect the powerline adapters to the same power phase at home. If you don't do this, the powerline adapter doesn't work or only works partially.

Lower speed than promised

  • Works a lot faster than the WiFi range (in the attic then)
  • Has both WiFi and Ethernet ports
  • Speed is not as promised I got around 40 Mbs (it should be able to handle at least 300).

A minimum speed of 300 mbs was promised for the wifi and 500 for the ethernet ports.
However, I only get around 40 mbs, while I easily get 200 mbs from the router on the landing on the 1st floor.
A bit misleading than that description, Tp link also promises the above speed.

This is what TP link says:
The HomePlug AV standard delivers up to 600 Mbps1 transfer rates over the existing power network, ideal for lag-free streaming of HD or 3D videos and online gaming
Extend 300Mbps wireless connections to hard-to-reach places in the home or office.

And coolblue says very nice:
Ethernet speed
Fast Ethernet (100Mbps)
Maximum Ethernet Speed
500 Mbit/s
Socket integrated

Which of the 2 is it now?
If you can't even get close to 100 mbs why don't you remove the latter? (Maximum ethernet speed
500 Mbit/s.

WiFi stability in exchange for speed

  • Easy to set up
  • Good if you need Ethernet connection somewhere you can't reach a cable
  • Does not carry same WiFi speed

50mbps wifi, turns into only 10mbps through this device
