I must confess that I was a bit skeptical when I entered the entire Citation series as a 5.1 set-up in the living room. I come from an audiophile set-up with countless high-end speakers and a subwoofer for about € 2000 alone. That installation sounded great but was very much present in the living room (to some frustration of my wife) and additionally disadvantage all the cables that have to be laid to control the whole stuff that you can never get rid of properly. After a renovation of our living room I didn't feel like moving all those cables again and decided to take a step back with my audiophile hobby. Just good sound, but something that our interior is also happy with and without the hassle of the cables.

I was already acquainted with the Citation series by Harman Kardon in a few other places in the house and I was pleasantly surprised about that. Great sound and a nice design. Especially cool is the Google Chromecast ecosystem underneath that allows you to place speakers all over your house (even from different brands) and have them play as a "group". For the set-up in the living room, we decided to install the entire Citation series there, starting with the Citation Bar, the surrounds and therefore also this sub. Later (when they are available again) the towers will also be added.

The sub connects directly to the soundbar via a special wireless connection (WISA). That's nice because most home-garden routers are not at all suitable for streaming real-time audio in high quality. Connecting is therefore literally a matter of plugging in the plug and following the instructions on the soundbar. You simply place the sub somewhere near a socket and you're done. The sub is neatly switched on and off as needed by the Citation Bar. You can actually see that Citation Bar as the command center for the Citation 5.1 set-up and it controls all speakers.

The sound of the sub is obviously not comparable to my previous high-end subwoofer, but I had prepared myself for a huge setback and that was not too bad to my great surprise/relief. Yes, you can notice that this sub has "only" 200W of RMS power, but the design is such that it does sound controlled low. Not the hollow banging you often hear with average subwoofers. If you place the sub too close to a corner or to a wall, you run some risk of hearing that banging, but that applies to almost every sub. My advice is therefore always to place the sub in a few different places in the room until you experience the most beautiful sound. The big advantage of this sub is that it is "wireless" so that you can do that with impunity, all that is needed is power.

We have a fairly large living room and the sub is fine here. There are no possibilities to perform calibrations as I was used to from my audiophile era but HK has done its best to make the design and technology such that this is superfluous. Oh well, sometimes it's nice that you buy something that you can just plug in and it suddenly works without a lot of fine-tuning to achieve an optimal result (although that was often nice haha).

In terms of price/quality, the sub is a bit on the high side. For this amount you can also buy an entry-level SVS sub (or similar) with much more adjustment options and better quality, but 100% guaranteed it will not look so good in your interior and you will still mess around with cables and settings to get the desired result. reaches.

As an ex-audiophile I am convinced of the Citation series and therefore also about this sub. Yes there are some concessions in terms of audio quality (but I'm used to a 10K set) but this looks so slick and it sounds fantastic in comparison.
