Description

The GoPro HERO7 Black is very suitable for demanding videographers. Thanks to the HyperSmooth image stabilization, you can record very stable video images. The action camera predicts the movements of the camera and corrects them. This makes it seem as if the videos are made with a gimbal stabilizer. This makes the action camera suitable for capturing extreme sports. Record detailed images in 4K quality at 60 frames per second. In Full HD, you can record videos at 240 frames per second. Slow down these recordings up to 8 times to create sharp slow-motion recordings. Thanks to the HDR function, different exposures of 3 photos are balanced and combined until you have 1 well-lit recording. When your battery dies, you can replace it with a replacement battery.

Super images, less reliable

Introduction
After having used a SJCam for a few years (to step into the world of actioncams), I decided to switch to a better actioncam. The main reason for this is stabilization. Initially I went to look for a GoPro Hero 6, but it turned out to be constantly sold out. After doing some research, it turned out that the hero 7 was at the door. After looking at some reviews of the hero 7, I preordered it.

Packaging
Since this is my first GoPro, I have no comparison material with the predecessors. The packaging is well put together, there is a nice transparent dome on top of the box, where the new addition can already be seen. It also already has a single mount mounted along with the frame where the GoPro stands. The mount is sturdy and better put together than the mount of the SJCam (which of course cannot be compared). The GoPro already has a piece of "rubbery" stuff between the mount as standard, so that it can never come loose, very handy. The packaging also contains some manuals, stickers and of course the cable for charging. Finally, there is no housing for underwater, since the hero 7 is already watertight up to 10 meters as standard (it is doubtful whether it can withstand the cold, but I'll get to that later).

Operation
In terms of operation, the GoPro is also well put together. Thanks to the touchscreen on the back, you can set everything you want. Easily change resolution, switch between modes, and of course just see what you're filming. All options to be able to connect with a smartphone, the option to film with 1 push of a button (quickcapture) and the GPS, I have turned off by default, in order to save the somewhat small battery as much as possible. All in all, you can do about one and a half hours with 1 battery (provided in normal circumstances). Extra batteries are therefore a must with this camera.
The images that this camera shoots are really great. The stabilization is another world compared to the SJCam (which is not surprising). This GoPro has not disappointed me even in an indoor ski hall. In terms of stabilization, it really does a great job and it comes pretty close to a Gimbal. It won't completely replace it (especially in low light), but it's pretty close. The artificial light in such a ski hall does him no good, as there is some flickering image.

GoPro app
GoPro's app works as expected. You can see the images from your GoPro live on your mobile (with a small delay). From there you can control everything that can actually be controlled on your camera. All in all, I will not use this function much because of the battery life. But it's a nice feature. However, I will use the extra app "Quick" from GoPro several times. This app ensures that a small "after movie" can be made quickly from the GoPro images. Since it has also been made smarter since the Hero 7 (face recognition, smile recognition), he takes nice images from it and puts it in its own "after movie". You can also edit quite a few things yourself to quickly get a small video. Nice for your days out where you don't want to make a complete edit.

Issues
I have now tested the GoPro with two activities, hiking and indoor skiing. There were some problems with both.
While walking, the GoPro would not start right away. Just before that I had done a firmware update, and during the first boot it wouldn't. Removing and reinserting the battery resolved this issue.
With skiing the problems were a bit more persistent. All in all, I've had three problems with this GoPro, which lowers the reliability somewhat. First, the GoPro gave a message after about an hour that it could no longer be stabilized, because it was too cold (-5 degrees according to the website of the indoor ski hall). This doesn't seem very cold to me personally, does it? The special thing about this notification is that you must first click on the notification, before you can stop filming / turn off the GoPro. Afterwards on the images, I could not see any difference between the moments when the notification was not there, and when the notification was there (apparently the stabilization was on?).
Second I was at the top of the track, I started the actioncam, and I got an error that the SD card had to be formatted. I could either run this (which would make everything go away), or cancel it. After choosing the latter, doing a reboot, everything worked properly again.
Finally, the GoPro stopped working spontaneously (with about 40 percent battery) during a descent. After a few beeps it was over, and I couldn't get it started again so quickly. Later that day, when I got home, I tried to boot again, and everything was working as it should. With 38 percent on the counter.
All in all, I've had a lot of problems with this camera. The question is whether this is all due to the cold of a slope? Or that there is more to it. In the meantime I am already active on the GoPro forum and I have already received some tips. My SD Card is between the recommended cards in terms of type, but the model number there is for the 32gb variant, and not the 64gb (which I have). So the question is whether it is because of that (which seems strong to me). Furthermore, tips came in about formatting SD cards via the computer, and then in the GoPro itself. Finally, the comment came that GoPro has some boot problems by default, and that usually within 1 to 2 months, some firmware updates roll out that should improve reliability. In the meantime I'm doing some further testing to see if I can figure out some problems.
I can't really give a real conclusion about this device yet. In terms of reliability, he currently scores with me not really super, but that can of course come. The images that can be made, on the other hand, are great! I'm going to do some more testing in the next few days to see if the problems persist.

The action camera for this social media era!

  • Live streaming
  • TimeWarp function
  • Less bothered by ambient noise
  • Quite pricey

At first glance, the GoPro HERO 7 Black does not seem to differ much from its predecessor except for its color. Nevertheless, a number of adjustments have been made, which makes it extremely interesting to take a look at this camera.

Like its predecessor, the HERO 7 films in 4K at 60fps, in 2.7k at 120fps and in 1080p at 240fps. However, a HyperSmooth image stabilization has now been added (compared to the standard stabilization of the HERO 6). This provides a stabilization that is comparable to the stabilization of a gimbal. A fine detail that makes the purchase of additional accessories unnecessary.

The HERO 7 is really set up as a camera that is compatible with social media. For example, there is the possibility to stream live on Facebook and Instagram, for example. What a fun and unique addition. You can also capture photos and videos in portrait mode, which is ideal for Snapchat and Instagram.

The microphone has also undergone an improvement. Where with the HERO 6 you could sometimes hear ambient and camera noise, this is completely gone with the HERO 7.

All in all, the HERO 7 is a great camera that everyone can have a lot of fun with. For me, the upgrade from HERO 6 to HERO 7 was definitely a good choice and I can recommend it to everyone.
There may not have been huge leaps forward in the usual sense of quality, but when it comes to usage, the HERO 7 has made great strides!

Very satisfied!

  • Waterproof without extra case
  • Touchscreen and clear display
  • Can take a beating
  • Price

The term "action camera" actually falls short of the GoPro.
For me it's just an all-round travel camera that you can easily take with you, is waterproof, easy to operate for everyone, can take quite a beating, can be mounted anywhere, has a touch display that you can also see with sunglasses on, Shoot beautiful and stable images in all kinds of fps, take beautiful pictures and of course super view!
in short, a small all-rounder for big and small, young and old.

Some free tips from my experience with the 2 previous models, the 5 black and the 6 black and now also the 7 black, maybe someone will benefit from it
"so here we go".

The Hero 5, 6 & 7 support all kinds of sd cards, but one just a bit better than the other, I use Sandisk Extreme and Samsung Evo & Pro USH-l without any problems.
Writing speed preferably 90mb/s or higher at 4k and if you only film 1080 (30mb/s) or 2.7k (60mb/s), lower is also sufficient.

Format your card regularly in the camera instead of on the PC.

I always set my display to 40a50% ... saves the battery.

Voice control and GPS is nice but if you can't or don't want to use it, turn it off ... also saves battery.

Not a fan of charging in the camera, so I have a GoPro USB charging block (also charge on a power bank, so it's also easy for on the go), comes with an extra battery, which is handy
...the wall USB charger isn't included yet, by the way, it's still gopro, isn't it?
I use a wall charger (...and power bank) from Anker, works fine... also my quickcharge Samsung charger that came standard with my tablet has no problem with it.

GoPro app in combination with a phone or tablet with VPN on it and turned it on has already given me the necessary sync. problems delivered... Turning off VPN for a while and solving it, occasionally emptying the app's cash also sometimes helps.

With me only the 2.4ghz wifi band works well, with 5ghz wifi i can't connect with my gopro.

If you use the Gopro software on your PC to edit, you can also put various overlays on your material... eg current speedometers or g-force meters, very nice.
It is important that you turn on the GPS in your camera, otherwise it will not work.
...and this is only possible in the GoPro software as far as I know.

...and a giga micro sd card is nice, but just to be sure I prefer to spread the material over several cards.

Small indication...
128gb on 2.7k & 4k +/- 4 hours of movie...my default setting bytheway.
128GB at 1080 +/- 7.5 hours of movie.

Look a little further for cheap accessories...or actually a lot further.

There will always be negatives, but they are becoming less and less every year, this is just a super nice camera that you can throw in your bag, so to speak.... luckily there is still the price and with € 429 this is certainly the case not cheap there are still excellent cheaper alternatives to be found that might already meet all your needs and fit the wallet a lot better...for me the water resistance without a protective case, the ability to exchange batteries and a display with touchscreen is always the deciding factor, but that is of course personal.
