What's IPL hair removal and how does it work?
What's IPL hair removal?
A light-based hair removal device works with light pulses. These light pulses reach the hair follicles underneath your skin. The hair contains pigment which absorbs the light and turns it into heat. This heat brings the hair follicles to a rest after a while. This way, you tackle hair growth at the root, which means your hairs won't grow back for a few months. This way, you can enjoy a hair-free smooth skin for months, without a razor or epilator. This makes IPL hair removal an easy and safe way to remove hairs.
Is IPL safe?
Removing hairs with IPL is safe, painless, and not harmful to your skin. It's important that you use the right settings and the recommended treatment plan. Most IPL devices help you with a smartphone app and sensor. This way, you'll know exactly which setting to use and when it's time for another treatment. In addition, most devices have a safety system and UV filter. Thanks to the safety system, the device only flashes when it touches your skin. The UV filter protects your skin from harmful UV radiation.
How do treatments with IPL work?
After you connect your IPL device to your smartphone, you'll receive a treatment plan. The first treatments in the plan fall under the start-up phase. Repeat these treatments every 1 or 2 weeks, depending on your hair growth, for 4 to 12 times. A treatment takes about 20 minutes, so you'll be done in no time. When the hairs don't grow back, the maintenance phase starts. In this phase, you can use the IPL device every 4 to 8 weeks. This is an estimate and differs per person and per body part.
For who is IPL hair removal suitable?
Skin tone and hair color
IPL devices only work well if there's a large contrast between your skin tone and hair color. This way, IPL hair removal isn't suitable for darker skin tones and white, gray, light-blond, or red hairs. Check the table on the website of the product or the manual to see if the device is suitable for you. We don't recommend an IPL device for use on a freckled skin or on birthmarks. In that case, an epilator is a good alternative. Do you have a single freckle or birthmark? Choose an IPL device with built-in skin sensor.

Men and women
IPL hair removal is suitable for both men and women. Different rules apply to different genders. Men and women can use IPL on the legs, stomach, arms, back, and parts of the bikini line or pubic area. Women can also remove hairs from the jaw or upper lip with IPL, but not the inner labia and vagina. Men can't remove hairs from the face, neck, areas with beard growth, the pubic bone, and scrotum. Both men and women can't use IPL hair removal on the lips, nipples, anus, ears, and around piercings.
