Get started with the hair straightener
In 5 steps, we'll explain how to create your favorite hair style with a hair straightener. We'll highlight these steps in this article.
- Step 1. Take care of, protect, and brush your hair.
- Step 2. Divide your hair.
- Step 3. Choose the right temperature.
- Step 4. Straighten your hair or create curls.
- Step 5. Clean the hair straightener
Step 1: take care of, protect, and brush your hair.
The important first step when you straighten your hair, is that you use a heat protectant. That's because a hair straightener works with heat, which can damage your hair. Use a heat protectant for your dry hairs. That can be a spray or a few drop of serum. Next, thoroughly brush your hair. Do you have frizzy hair, or is it damaged because you dyed or bleached it? Use extra hair care product.
Step 2: section your hair
While you straighten your hair, it's important your other hair isn't in the way. We recommend to divide your hair into different sections and fix them in place with a clamp. For example, put your index finger to your temples, and bring them backwards in a straight line. The hair you collect with the fingers is the first section. The hair that remains is the second, lower section. Do you have long hair, thick hair, or much hair? We recommend to divide it into more sections.
Step 3: choose the right temperature
In step 1, you used a heat protectant, but this doesn't mean you can simply straighten at the highest temperature. You can easily adjust the heat to your hair type. The generally recommended temperature is 185°C. If you have delicate or damaged hair, we recommend a lower temperature. Does your hair feel rigid, full, or healthy? You can choose a higher temperature. We don't recommend temperatures higher than 230°C.
Step 4: straighten your hair or create curls
Straight hair
Take the lock your want to straighten and brush it thoroughly. Keep in mind you don't take too much hair at once, because it has to fit between the plates of the hair straightener. When you start to straighten, start as close to the root as possible. Hold your hair straightener horizontally, clamp your hair, and gently slide the straightener downwards. Don't clamp your hair too firmly, so you prevent a pulling feeling or broken hairs.
Curls and wave
For curls and wave, you can twist the hair straightener while you slide the straightener downwards along a lock of hair. Clamp the lock, twist the hair straightener around once, and slide the straightener down. You don't keep it in the same position constantly, like you do when you straighten your hair. Do you know in which 3 ways you can create curls or a wave? We'll explain that in the article below.
Step 5: clean your hair straightener
If you use your hair straightener a lot, bacteria might build up after some time. The mousse and heat protection products you use for your hair also end up on the plates. It's important to regularly clean it. After straightening, unplug the hair straightener from the socket and let it cool down completely. Next, wipe the plates with a damp cloth. Do you want to clean more thoroughly? Use a cotton swab with disinfection alcohol instead of a damp cloth.
