A laptop for on the go: what should you keep in mind?

You're looking for a laptop for on the go, so you'd rather not have a laptop that's too large or heavy. But what is too large and heavy? To help you make your choice, we've listed for you what to look out for.

In short

A laptop for on the go needs to meet the following requirements:

  • A weight of up to 1.5kg
  • A size of up to 14 inches

In addition, there are 2 extra features to keep in mind:

  • A battery life of at least 8 hours, so you don't have to charge the laptop during your workday.
  • A laptop with a foldable or detachable screen, to use it as a tablet on the go.

A laptop that's not too heavy

The first thing you look at when buying a laptop for on the go, is the weight. Of course, you don't want to lug it around when you're on your bike or walking. But what's a light laptop? To comfortably take your laptop on the go, we recommend a laptop up to and including 1.5kg. You'll hardly feel that it's in your bag, and it's not too heavy on your lap. A few more grams don't make the laptop too heavy. A 1.53kg laptop is still quite easy to take with you, for example.

A compact laptop

When you're on the go, you want a light small and thin laptop. Your laptop must fit into your bag if you take it with you, and you won't enjoy a heavy laptop on your lap. Laptops with a 10, 11, or 12-inch screen fit in most bags and are often light enough. There are also laptops that are 13 inches or 14 inches and don't weigh a lot. Do you want a larger screen with a numeric keypad? Go for a 15-inch laptop, which is the maximum size for on the go according to us.

A long battery life

In addition to the weight and size requirements, it's useful to pay attention to the battery life of a laptop. For example, you don't want to be constantly looking for a socket to charge your laptop if you're often on the go for work all day long. Make sure to choose a laptop with a battery life of at least 8 hours. This way, you won't really have to worry about whether you have the charger with you.

A 2-in-1 laptop

Another option is not to look at weight and size, but at the type of laptop. A 2-in-1 with a 360-degree foldable or detachable screen is very useful when you're on the go. You can turn the laptop into a tablet and use it on your lap while swiping through your apps. A 2-in-1 isn't very heavy or large usually, but it's even lighter and more compact when you disconnect the screen. You can just leave the keyboard in your bag.
