When you're using a microwave, it makes noise. This is caused by the fan that spins and by the microwave tube that produces the microwave signals. Don't worry, these sounds are normal. In this article, we'll look at the different sounds that a microwave can make.

  • A scraping sound
  • A crackling sound
  • A buzzing sound
  • A plopping sound

A scraping sound

Interior microwave

If your microwave makes a scraping sound while it heats, this is usually caused by the turntable.

  • Check if the turntable is properly attached. Move or rotate the turntable until it's in the right place. It'll lean on the holder and won't touch the interior of the microwave.
  • Clean the bottom and the turntable rails. Dirt beneath the turntable causes a scraping noise. It's best to clean the turntable and microwave after use.

  • Check if you haven't accidentally put a fork or silver spoon in your microwave. Objects made of precious metals can't go in the microwave. They create sparks and crackling sounds and can damage the microwave.
  • Don't use enameled baking sheets in the microwave either. You should only use accessories that are intended for the microwave. These have a special coating. You can check to manual to see which accessories are suitable.

If your microwave makes a buzzing or blowing sound after use, the microwave is overheated. In order to cool down, the microwave turns on the cooling fan. It'll continue until the microwave is cooled down. This is normal and not something to worry about. The sound stops when the microwave has cooled down.

A plopping sound

Open microwave

Sometimes, you can hear popping or thudding sounds in your microwave when you heat up food inside packaging. You can prevent this by piercing holes in the packaging, so the air can escape. You can also pierce holes in the skin of a sweet potato or pumpkin.
