How do you descale your Philips 4300 EP4349/70 and 5400 EP5447/90?

In this article, we'll explain how to easily descale the Philips 4300 EP4349/70 and the Philips 5400 EP5447/90. This allows you to prevent blockages and defects, and you extend the lifespan of your machine. When you need to descale the coffee machine, you'll see a message on the display. If you use the AquaClean water filter, you have to descale the coffee machine less often.

Get started with the Philips 4300 and 5400

In the video, we'll explain how to descale your Philips machine step by step. It takes about 30 minutes to descale. We'll go through these steps:

  • Step 1. Empty all parts of the coffee machine.
  • Step 2. Fill the water tank with Philips descaler and fresh water.
  • Step 3. Rinse the machine.
  • Step 4. Fill the water tank with water.
  • Step 5. Install a new AquaClean water filter in the water tank.

You need:

  • Philips descaler
  • 1.5L container
  • AquaClean water filter

How often should you descale?

If you use the AquaClean water filter, you don't have to descale the machine as often. When you need to descale the coffee machine, you see a notification on the display. You have to descale once every 1.5 year if you use a water filter. Don't you use a water filter? Descale your coffee machine once every 3 months.

Step 1: prepare the descaling

Pour the descaler in the water tank
  1. Press the icon 'clean' and select the 'descale' program in the menu. Confirm your choice with 'ok'.
  2. The display asks you if you want to descale the machine, press 'ok'.
  3. Remove the LatteGo system if it's attached to the machine.
  4. Remove the drip tray and coffee grounds tray from the machine. Empty them, rinse them, and place them back into the device.
  5. Remove the water tank from the coffee machine and pour the water in the sink.
  6. Remove the used water filter from the water tank. Confirm this on the display with 'ok'.
  7. Empty the Philips descaler into the water tank and fill the water tank up to the 'calc/clean' indicator.
  8. Place the water tank back into the machine. Confirm this with 'ok'.

Step 2: descale the machine

Start the descaling
  1. Place a container of at least 1.5L under the coffee outlet and water outlet. Confirm this with 'ok'.
  2. Press the 'start/stop' button to start the descaling process. It takes about 30 minutes to descale.
  3. Wait for the coffee machine to stop releasing water.
  4. You'll see 'add water' on the display at a certain moment. Remove the container and water tank.
  5. Rinse the water tank and refill it with fresh water up to the 'calc/clean' indicator. Place the full water tank back into the machine.
  6. Empty the container and place it back under the coffee outlet and hot water outlet. Press 'ok'.

Step 3: rinse the machine

Install the water filter
  1. Press the 'start/stop' button to rinse the machine with water. This takes about 3 minutes.
  2. The machine stops rinsing automatically.
  3. After rinsing, remove the full container and empty it in the sink.
  4. Remove the water tank and install a new AquaClean water filter in the water tank.
  5. Fill the water tank with fresh water up to 'max' and place it back in the coffee machine.
  6. Your Philips 4300 or 5400 is ready for use.
