From the box
Once at home, I unboxed the air purifier right away. You'll find the air purifier and a manual in the box. Philips has already put the HEPA and carbon filter in the device for you. You only have to take the filters out of the plastic before you turn on the purifier. The nice thing about the Philips AC4550/10 is that it draws in the air at the front. This allows you to place it a little closer to the wall, without it losing its power.
The Air Matters app
As soon as you turn on the purifier, it tries to connect to WiFi. Philips explains step by step in the app how to do this. With the app, you can easily control the air purifier remotely and see what the current air quality in your home is. The app does have one downside. If you've set an operating schedule or turned off the air purifier, you have to reconnect and pair the air purifier with the app each time.
Measure air quality
The air quality at my house wasn't great. When I turned it on, it colored red for gas, particulate matter, and allergens right away After half an hour, the light turned blue again and the purifier started working softer. My cats thought this was a good time to inspect the cleaner. The air purifier picked up their allergens right away and started working harder. That was a bit of a scare, because the noise in the highest setting is a lot louder than in the lowest setting.
Silent in the lowest setting
To purify the air in your home, you can choose from 5 ventilation settings. Automatic, sleep, 1, 2, and turbo. Most of the time, I put the air purifier in setting 1. In the highest mode, I had to set the TV sound to 30 when it's normally set to 11. The automatic mode adjusts its ventilation speed continuously, which also changes the noise. Not very practical when you're watching TV, but a nice setting for when you're not at home.
Less odors and dust
I have 2 cats running around at home who produce quite a bit of dust with their digging in the litter box. We also smoke indoors at our home. So there's plenty of dust and foul odors. Thanks to the air purifier, the house smelled much less like cat litter and cigarettes smoke than without the air purifier. I also felt it was much less dusty. Normally, there's a layer of dust on the cabinets after 2 days and now it was only after a week.
Conclusion
I'm pleasantly surprised with the results of the air purifier. It smells much less like cat litter and cigarette smoke and it's less dusty in the house. The sound in the lowest settings is very silent, so you don't have to turn up the sound of the TV. What I really like about this air purifier is that you can easily control it remotely with the app and you're always aware of the air quality in your home.
