Expert review of the Nintendo Switch OLED
Nintendo Switch OLED White
- The 7-inch OLED screen is sharper and brighter than the regular Nintendo Switch.
- You can use the Nintendo Switch OLED as a console for in the living room and on the go.
- With the included Joy-Con controllers set, you can only play alone or with 2 players on this console.
- To game online, the console needs to be connected to an internet connection.
First impression of the Nintendo Switch OLED
When I took the Nintendo Switch OLED out of the box, I noticed a difference in quality right away. The console is heavier and feels more luxurious. In addition, a couple of new things stood out to me right away.
- The screen
- The Nintendo Switch OLED dock
- The wider stand
Below, I'll discuss the big changes extensively and I'll tell you why they make such a big difference.
Sharp and bright screen
Before I even turn on the screen, I notice a few things. The screen is slightly larger than that of its predecessor, but the bezels are also thinner. This means that it uses more of the screen than the original Switch. When I turned on the Nintendo Switch OLED, I saw the biggest improvement. The OLED screen is incredibly sharp and colors pop on the screen. In addition, the plastic screen has been replaced by a glass screen. This ensures a more luxurious look, but you should keep in mind that glass is susceptible to fingerprints and scratches. If you don't want to take any chances, buy a case for your Nintendo Switch OLED to prevent damages.
BlueBuilt Nintendo Switch storage case
- With this protective cover, you can safely take your Nintendo Switch OLED with you.
- The padded interior prevents damage to the screen of your Nintendo Switch OLED.
- This storage case has space for 10 Nintendo Switch games.
- This protective cover doesn't have space for a controller.
The new dock
Both the console itself and the included dock for your TV have been improved. The dock feels much sturdier than its predecessor and finally has a cutout for your cables. In addition, you can connect the cables more easily. That's because you can remove the flap on the back of the dock. Nintendo also added a new connector for your internet cable to the dock. These are all nice improvements, but I enjoyed this new console the most in the handheld mode.
The wider kickstand
The kickstand of the original Switch didn't look great in my opinion. It was made of very thin plastic and felt like it could break off at any moment. The kickstand of the Nintendo Switch OLED is made of sturdier plastic. In addition, it's as wide as the screen itself. You can also set the kickstand to various positions. I played Big Brain Academy with some friends and placed the Nintendo Switch OLED in the center of the table. I wasn't afraid that the kickstand would break when a friend tapped the screen with a bit too much enthusiasm. This is another nice improvement, but it's one you only notice with games like Big Brain Academy and 51 Worldwide games.
Conclusion
I find that the Nintendo Switch OLED is a huge upgrade compared to the original Switch from 2019. The screen is much sharper and brighter. The glass screen is a nice improvement, but it's more susceptible to fingerprints and scratches. The dock is also more beautiful, and it's more practical with the cutout for the cables. I did play in the handheld mode more often than on the TV, because the screen of the OLED is better than that of most TVs. The Nintendo Switch OLED is perfect if you often game on the go and want the best experience.
