Expert review Apple HomePod Mini
Apple HomePod Mini
- Despite its small size, the sound the speaker produces is as powerful as a medium-sized WiFi speaker.
- Thanks to the 360-degree sound distribution, your music sounds clear from every direction.
- Because Siri is built-in, you can control the speaker via voice commands.
- You can only connect the speaker to other Apple HomeKit products.
First impression of the HomePod Mini
Even before I start unpacking, I'm surprised by the size of the square package. With just 8.4cm, the Apple HomePod Mini is smaller than I expected. This allows me to easily hold it in 1 hand. In the package I find a USB-C cable including an adapter, to power the speaker.
Modern design with easy touchscreen
The HomePod Mini is spherical and eye-catching. It has a futuristic design and I think that's awesome. This design does cause the speaker to be unbalanced on unstable surfaces. The top of the speaker is touch-sensitive and where I control the volume. On the bottom, there's a USB-C port I use to power it.
Small ball, high sound quality
The 360-degree sound distribution surprised me positively. I hear the sound clearly in my entire living room and I think that's impressive, especially when you consider the size of the speaker. My playlists sound quite clear and even the bass is pretty powerful.
Illuminated top
I think the color screen on top of the speaker is pretty and useful. A rotating, colorful image lights up when Siri is listening. An orange indicator means it's trying to connect. And a bright, pulsating light dances to the rhythm of my favorite song while I listen to music.
More HomePods, more fun
In general, the more HomePod Mini models. the better. With 2 HomePods, I can listen to stereo sound and a higher volume, which makes my living room ready for a party in no time. When you have even more HomePods, you can also use the intercom function. This allows you to send messages to other rooms. Unfortunately, I can't pair the HomePod Mini to other brands. You need an iPhone to control the HomePod via your smartphone, for example. This is a disadvantage to me.
Conclusion
The HomePod Mini impresses me with its room-filling sound and modern design. You do need to have Apple HomeKit products to enjoy these advantages though. I wonder if its full potential can be used in most smart houses. In general, the quality is still very high and the HomePod has versatile usage options that offer a pleasant experience.
