What determines the build quality of a dishwasher?

The build quality of a dishwasher is important for the lifespan of the appliance. A dishwasher will be evaluated on 7 different specifications. Depending on the score per specification, the dishwasher will get a high-end, mid-range, or basic build quality. In this article, I'll explain which specifications there are and what the difference between these classes is.

Specifications build quality dishwashers

Built-in dishwasher
  • Interior material: a stainless steel tub is more hygienic and reduces the risk of leakage.
  • Motor type: a brushless motor wears less fast, has a lower energy consumption, and a lower noise level.
  • Leak protection type: the more types of leak protection a dishwasher has, the safer the appliance.
  • Machine cleaning: thoroughly cleans the dishwasher from the inside so that it won't smell or become clogged.
  • Guide rails: welded guide rails make sure that the lower rack doesn't derail or catch on something.
  • Bearing wheels: wheels with bearings roll more smoothly and wear less.
  • Noise level: the thickness and type of insulation, material use, and motor determine whether a dishwasher is silent or not.

High-end build quality

Inverter motor

When you're looking for a dishwasher with a long lifespan, the high-end build quality is the best choice for you. The appliances in this segment have at least 70% of the above specifications and always have an inverter motor. Combined with the housing and insulation, this provides a relatively low noise level. For an extra long lifespan, choose a dishwasher with machine cleaning function. This ensures that no dirt rests remain that can cause blockages.

Mid-range build quality

Stainless steel tub

The dishwashers in this class have at least 50% of the above specifications and all have a stainless steel tub. The benefit is that the tub forms a whole and doesn't have any seams or cracks. Thanks to this, food rests won't get stuck and there's a smaller chance of a leak. Most dishwashers in this segment have an inverter motor. It wears less quickly than a regular motor and uses less energy.

Basic build quality

Basic dishwasher

If you're looking for a relatively affordable dishwasher, go for a model with a basic build quality. You do sacrifice on the lifespan of the appliance. That's because the dishwashers in this class have less than 50% of the above specifications. Despite the lower lifespan. every dishwasher has 1 or multiple types of leak protection. This way, you prevent leakage on your kitchen floor.
