Compare the DJI Avata 2 to the DJI Avata

The DJI Avata 2 is the successor to the DJI Avata. These racing drones are both suitable for indoors and outdoors. The Avata 2 records even clearer footage in low light thanks to the large image sensor. You can also perform stunts with this drone, like a flip or a side roll. Are you curious about the differences and similarities between these drones? We'll explain them in this article.

Image sensor

Avata 2: clearer images thanks to the 1/1.3-inch image sensor

The Avata 2 has a renewed and larger 1/1.3-inch image sensor. This means that the sensor catches more light. When recording in dark circumstances, this produces clearer footage. You can record impressive drone footage of a sunset at the beach that way, for example. The drone has a 155-degree image angle, so you can effortlessly get a wide landscape in view. With this drone, you record in 4K resolution at 60 fps. This ensures razor-sharp footage that you can slow down once.

Avata: 1/1.7-inch sensor for footage in daylight

Due to its smaller size, the 1/1.7-inch image sensor of the Avata catches less light. This means the footage it records at night isn't as clear. With this drone, you record the best footage during the day. This Avata also records in 4K resolution at 60 fps. Thanks to this high image quality, both drones are suitable for social media or promotional videos. This drone also has a 155-degree image angle, so you can use it for footage of a large nature reserve.

Stunts

Avata 2: perform flips

With the Avata 2, you can perform impressive stunts like flips. To do this, the drone rotates forwards or backwards 360 degrees. For special video footage, roll the drone to the left or right. You can create a smooth transition between 2 scenes that way, for example. Want to create a truly unique effect? The drone will fly towards the desired subject at the touch of a button. It'll then rotate 180 degrees right away, so you fly away from the subject backwards. You can only perform stunts when using the DJI Motion 3 Controller.

Avata: no stunts

The DJI Avata can't do any stunts at all. This means you can only make simple video recordings. If you want to create a rotating effect, you have to control the drone with a remote yourself. This looks less smooth than with the effects of the Avata 2. If your drone crashes and lands upside-down, you can use the Turtle Mode function on both drones. This makes the drone rotate itself back to the right side. That way, you can continue flying without having to go find your drone.

File profiles

Avata 2: 10-bit D-Log M Color Mode

With the DJI Avata 2, you record in the 10-bit D-Log M file profile. This is a RAW profile, so you record somewhat flatter footage. This footage does contain more data, which provides many editing opportunities. You can create vibrant and realistic colors for professional footage.

Avata: D-Cinelike Color Mode

The D-Cinelike profile of the DJI Avata has a smaller dynamic range than the Avata 2. This means you can emphasize fewer details in the shadows and highlights. Editing the colors of your video is also less accurate, so images look less realistic.

Obstacle detection and flight time

Avata 2: 23 minutes of flying

You can fly for 23 minutes on 1 battery charge with the Avata 2. For a racing drone, this is a long flight time. That's because these drones fly very fast, so the batteries have to be as light as possible. This makes the battery life somewhat slower than normal drones. Want to fly with the Avata 2 for an extra long time? We recommend the Fly More Combo, which includes 2 extra batteries. Thanks to the obstacle detection on the bottom and back, you can fly and land safely with this drone.

Avata: 18 minutes of flying

With the DJI Avata, you can fly for 18 minutes on 1 battery charge. This is shorter than with the Avata 2, but it's still quite a long flight time for a racing drone. If you buy extra batteries, you can increase the flight time of this drone. The Avata only has obstacle detection sensors at the bottom. This means you can't fly as safely with this drone. During the flight, you have to keep an eye on all obstacles.

Conclusion

If you like to race with a drone, both the DJI Avata 2 and the DJI Avata are a good choice for you. These drones both fly at a very high speed. If you want to fly for longer and perform stuns with your drone, choose the Avata 2. You can enjoy flying for longer thanks to the extended battery life and record impressive footage with flips.
