Edge lit screens only have background lights at the edges of the screen. These lights dim or light up as soon as the image becomes dark or clear. This allows the TVs to stay slim, but the disadvantage of it is that the lights have to shine extra brightly to illuminate the center of the screen. This may cause distortions in the image. Think of light spots that arise at the bottom, top, or side of the screen.
