From bean to capsule
The origin and growth
The story of Nespresso coffee starts with the coffee plant. When its 12 months old, to be exact. The red, ripe berries that grow on the plant are harvested after 6 to 8 months after they blossom. This is when the second part of the process starts.
From green bean to roasted bean
The red berry goes through a process that removes the flesh and any impurities until only the core remains, namely the green bean within. Only a bean with the right density, color, and size makes it through the strict selection process. These beans are shipped to Switzerland, where they are roasted. While they're roasted, the green beans undergo a transformation that develops their flavor and aromatic potential.
Ground coffee in a capsule
The coffee bean with its characteristic flavor is ground and hermetically sealed right after it's roasted. This is the only way that Nespresso can guarantee the freshness and the quality of the flavor. After use, you don't throw away the aluminum capsule, but you recycle it. The coffee grounds in this capsule can be turned into biofuel.
