Pros and cons

According to our 3D printer expert
  • The Ultimaker 3 is automatically configured correctly, because the printer uses NFC to recognize what type of filament is installed.
  • You can wirelessly send your print jobs to the 3D printer.
  • Prints with a minimum layer height of 20 microns for very detailed prints.
  • Due to its open construction, the 3D printer is sensitive to temperature changes.

Description

The Ultimaker 3 Extended lets you make complex mathematical models and 3D models, thanks to its 2 printheads. You can mix filaments of 2 different colors and print multi-colored spare parts for your car or motorbike, for instance. You don't need to be standing next to your 3D printer to print out all your creations, because you can send your files to the printer via WiFi. Because the printer uses NFC to automatically detect what type of filament you're using, you can start printing straight away. The Ultimaker 3 lets you create prototypes up to 215x215x200mm in size with a layer height between 20 and 200 microns. It lets you create larger, more detailed objects than the Ultimaker 2 and 2+. Because you don't just swap the printer nozzles, but the entire printhead, the Ultimaker makes it easy to switch between filaments. The casing has a semi-open construction, so it's best to place it in a well-ventilated area if you don't want to be bothered by the smell of burnt plastic.

Good quality but a compromise for ABS

  • Quality product
  • No closed housing

In itself a high-quality product, but it is marketed as if it can also be printed with ABS. This is a stronger material than PLA and can withstand higher temperatures (eg in the car) and is stronger because it breaks less easily. After a few weeks of experimenting I have come to the conclusion that an open 3D printer is always a compromise. That is the reason that you come across quite a lot of DIY housings on the internet (just Google it), and that is a bit of a shame for an expensive product like this, there are also manufacturers that supply 3D printers with closed housing.
The point is that polymers, as just mentioned, shrink quite a bit when they cool down during printing, leading to warping, and a high chance of the model detaching from the build plate. There also the reason for the use of glue on the build plate and other tricks. Here a closed housing helps by keeping the model warm enough during printing to prevent too much shrinkage. Professional devices even have a heated housing.
In addition, opinions are divided about the health of inhaling ABS vapors. The Ultimaker is marketed as a device that you can print with on your desk, but that is probably not healthy for ABS printing.
Another downside is the somewhat outdated dial / menu.
My advice is therefore to look at printers with a closed housing. The use of dual extrusion is questionable whether you need it. After a few weeks I can print nicely with ABS with relatively small prints and have to go through quite a learning curve, and also made a housing myself. So a little aftertaste here.

Best 3D printer I've ever had/seen

  • Very good print quality
  • Plug & Play
  • construction volume is sometimes a bit tight

Are you looking for a 3D printer without problems - that's it.
After more than 8 days of intensive use (print 24h/day) for technical prototypes, not a single failed print.

Beautiful device! Easy and accurate

  • Quick to install
  • Print accurately
  • Beautiful design
  • Expensive

Very easy to install, ready to print after 15 minutes. A good result on standard settings. Many possibilities in terms of use of materials. Dual extruder and WiFi are really recommended!

The software related to the print queue is not completely bug free. The queue sometimes remains on an old print while you are already working on a new one.
