Epson Perfection V850 Pro

At my study we also have a number of scanners from this series, and you could not wish for a better flatbat. If you really want something better you can look at a Flextight X1 or a Drum Scanner, but both are a mistake of the price of such an Epson. The supplied software seems to be from the year 2000. It doesn't exactly work by itself, but after some tutorials and maybe even reading the manual you will eventually figure it out. It is quite large, but not huge either and fits perfectly on my desk with two 27" screens. So if you are still in doubt, I hope to have convinced you with this review.

The positive points are all in the hardware of the device, robust, neatly finished, very good scan quality,... Installing the supplied software is certainly no easy task and the result is two control icons and underlying functionalities. The software has many functionalities, so it is indeed a PRO device, but the UI/UX is certainly dated.

A great scanner for the money. Resolving power and tonal distinction are good, dare with a little smart scanning to get 20-30 MPx from 35mm film and around 100 MPx from a 6x6 negative. Scanner had been on my wish list for years to replace my V600, should have gotten it sooner. Certainly not a drum scanner, but honestly the best alternative to scan at home (affordably) with good results. A big plus for me is being able to scan flat film for my 4x5 camera. Silverfast is well worth upgrading to v9 Ai Studio - check the website for discounts on Epson scanners! The only drawback is the scan windows that feel a bit too plastic. They open a little awkwardly, and the ANR windows are plastic, which tends to attract dust from static electricity; if you're careful with this though, it's a great scanner, and justifies the hefty price tag.
