What type of lens do I use for nature and animal photography?
Telephoto lens
You can use a 70-200mm telephoto lens if you can get a bit close to the animals. It's still possible to zoom in, so you don't have to scare the animals. Thanks to the 70mm focal length, you can also fit some of the surrounding nature in the photo. More expensive telephoto lenses also have a maximum aperture of about f/2.0. This way, you can use a faster shutter speed to take photos of fast animals without increasing the ISO value.
Wide-angle with zoom
With a wide-angle lens, you can zoom in in any direction. You can take photos of pets and other small animals in their own environment. The lens is also suitable to take photos of large nature areas. With the wide angle, you can take beautiful landscape photos. When you take photos of animals, your lens has to have a large maximum aperture. Otherwise, the lens isn't suitable to take photos with a fast shutter speed.
Macro lens
A macro lens is suitable to take photos of small details of animals and flowers. They often have a focal point between 60 and 150mm. With a macro lens, you can often focus on your subject from up close. You can create a blurry background, so you focus on 1 detail. Thanks to the fixed aperture, the image quality is high. This allows you to take clear photos of all details. There are also macro lenses that zoom. You can use these to take photos of a bird or butterfly that's farther away.
Super telephoto
During a safari and at a tropical destination, you can see many unique animals, so you can to take nice photos of them. The problem is that you can't come too close. You can easily solve that with a super telephoto lens. There are lenses with a maximum focal length of 600mm. this way, you can bring the animals closer from a large distance. These lenses often have an f/4.5-6.3 aperture. The large opening catches a lot of light, so you can work with a fast shutter speed.
