How do we measure the noise level of a fully automatic coffee machine?

Some fully automatic coffee machines produce a lot of noise. This is annoying when you're having a conversation with your guest or when your partner is still in bed in the morning and you want to make an espresso. Because the coffee machines grinds beans fresh, you'll always hear noise and a fully automatic machine is never silent. But there's a difference between the models. In this article, we'll explain these differences and tell you how we measure the noise level.

Silent, average, or loud?

Silent espresso machine

Silent coffee machines

We call coffee machines with a noise level of less than 66db relatively silent. The noise levels we measure with these machines are always lower than 66dB. This allows you to easily continue your conversation with your friend while you make a cup of coffee for the both of you.

Espresso machine average noise level

Averagely loud coffee machines

An average noise level of a fully automatic machine is somewhere between 66 and 70dB. When you make a cup of coffee with a machine like this, you'll have to pause the conversation with your neighbor. This is especially bothering when you make multiple cups of coffee back to back.

Espresso machine makes a lot of noise

Loud coffee machines

Coffee machines with a high noise level are louder than 70dB. We call these machines loud, as they make a lot of noise. Chances are that your partner will hear you make coffee from the bedroom.

How do we measure the noise level?

Measure noise level espresso machines Coolblue

We measure the noise level of a fully automatic coffee machine ourselves, just at the Coolblue office. We have a special room for this with the necessary supplies. We test each coffee machine in exactly the same way, so we compare them fairly. We measure the noise level both of grinding the beans and making coffee. The average of these two is the total noise level. Not all coffee machines have a milk system, that's why we don't include frothing milk in the average noise level. You can find these values in the specifications of the product that we sell.

What else do we test?

Test the build quality of coffee machines

It's difficult to judge how sturdy a coffee machine is by an image. That's why we test our fully automatic coffee machines and judge how sturdy all the different components of the machine are. That way, you know exactly what you're getting.
