Advice on tajines

With a tajine, you can make delicious stews and simmered dishes. In Northern Africa, they've been using this to prepare traditional dishes for centuries. A tajine is easy to use. Simply place it on a burner with some olive oil. Add all your favorite raw ingredients and let everything simmer with the lid on.

How does a tajine work?

Tajine on gas stove with ingredients

A tajine pot consists of 3 parts, a round dish and a cone-shaped lid. Just like any other pot, you place the dish on a burner. While it cooks, condensation forms on the inside of the lid. This falls back into the dish, which allows it so slowly simmer. And you het a very tender and juicy dish as a result. If you stew meat in a tajine, it takes about 4 hours for it to be done.

Which dishes can you make with a tajine?

Tajine with potatoes, meat, and vegetables

You can use a tajine to prepare tender stews and simmered dishes. Any type of vegetable, meat, or dish is suitable for preparation in a tajine. Cut all of the ingredients into large pieces and make sure to properly preheat the tajine with some olive oil. Put all of the ingredients for your fish in the dish, including herbs and other flavorings. When you place the cone-shaped lid on the dish, you allow everything to simmer and cook very slowly.

What does the material tell you about a tajine?

Red tajine with black bottom

Tajines can be made of different materials. The traditional material is clay. The useful thing about this is that it's dishwasher-safe. It's not suitable for induction, which is why there tajines made of cast iron or stainless steel as well. These are suitable for all heat sources, including induction. Cast iron conducts heat very well, but you do have to clean it manually. Stainless steel is dishwasher-safe, but it retains heat less well.
