How do you shave with an electric shaver?

For a hygienic, safe, and efficient shave, it's important to know what you're doing. Shaving with an electric shaver is very different from shaving with a manual razor. We'll guide you through the ideal shave.

Get started with an electric shaver

Shaving

An electric shaver works slightly different than a razor blade. We'll explain how a good shave looks based on the following steps.

  • Step 1. Prepare your skin and electric shaver.
  • Step 2. Check your shaving technique.
  • Step 3. Shave wet or dry.
  • Step 4. Take care of your skin.
  • Step 5. Replace your shaver head in time.

Step 1: prepare your skin and electric shaver

Wash your face

Each shave starts with a good preparation. Always ensure a well-maintained and clean electric shaver. That way, you prevent skin irritation and wounds. Clean your skin with warm water. This'll open your pores, which causes your beard hairs to come closer to the surface. As a result, you can shave more efficiently. You'll also protect your skin from a razor burn that way.

Step 2: check your shaving technique

Rotary and foil system

There are 2 types of electric shavers out on the market, electric shavers with a rotary system and ones with a foil system. They don't just differ in how they look, but also in their shaving technique. With a rotary system, you can make small circles on your face and the direction of the hairs does't matter. With a foil system, you have to move up and down. When you use an electric shaver in the wrong way, you'll damage your skin.

Step 3: shave wet or dry

Shave wet

Do you have sensitive skin? And do you often have a razor burn after shaving? We recommend you to shave with water, shaving gel, or shaving foam. That way, you can easily shave your beard without putting too much of a strain on your skin. For even more comfort, you can shave your face in the shower. Keep in mind that your electric shaver needs to be completely waterproof for this. Do you just want a quick shave? Shave dry.

Step 4: spread the pressure

Spread the pressure

Have the electric shaver do the work when shaving. Don't press too hard to prevent skin irritation. Sometimes, the shaver doesn't shave all the hairs in one go. Softly go over the same area again in that case. Don't do this more often, otherwise your skin will get irritated.

Step 5: take care of your skin

Post-shave treatment

No matter how careful you shave, it's always tough on your skin. That's why it's important to take good care of your skin after every shave. That's the only way to prevent a dry or tight skin, and possible skin irritation like red spots and ingrown hairs. Pat your skin with a cold towel and put some hydrating lotion on your face. This helps to calm you skin.

Step 6. Replace your shaver head in time

Replace shaver head

The shaving performance is the best with a sharp shaver head. When your shaver head is blunt, you can't shave as smooth and there's a greater chance on razor burn. That's why you should replace the shaver head in time. With a Braun electric shaver, you should replace your shaver head with a new one after about 1.5 years. The rotary blades of a Philips electric shaver have to be replaced every 2 years.
