How do you connect a powerline adapter?
Connect powerline adapter in 5 steps
- Connect the first adapter
- Find a suitable place for the other adapter
- Connect the second adapter
- Create 1 WiFi network in your house
- Add an extra adapter
Step 1: connect the first adapter
A set of powerline adapters always includes at least 2 stations. Which of the 2 is the base station is indicated on the box. You plug the base station into an earthed socket near your modem. You can find it in the same place where your phone line or TV cable enters the house. You plug the included network cable into one of the blue connectors on your modem. The other end goes into your powerline adapter.
Step 2: find a suitable place for the other adapter
You place the second powerline adapter in the location where you want WiFi or a network. For example, in your bedroom or pantry. This adapter has to be plugged into an earthed socket as well. Don't have an available earthed socket? You can also plug it into a wall socket without earth clips. Keep in mind that this lowers the internet speed. Never plug the adapter into a power strip. If you do, the powerline network won't work at all.
Step 3: connect the second adapter
Once both adapters are plugged into a socket, they'll automatically start searching for each other. You can tell by the blinking status light on the front or side of the adapters. Did the adapters connect? The light will burn permanently. Sometimes you need to perform an extra action to connect the adapters. To do this, you press and hold the 'sync' button on both devices for a couple of seconds. Make sure you do this within the first 2 minutes. That way, the adapters will start searching each other again.
Step 4: create 1 WiFi network in your house
You can give powerline adapters with WiFi the same WiFi network name as your main network. That way, you create a nearly seamless transition between the networks. You do this with the 'WPS' button on your powerline adapter. Press it shortly and press the same button on your modem. They'll connect within a few minutes. Sometimes the button is indicated with by an icon, namely 2 arrows in an oval. Does your modem not have WPS? You can change the name of your adapters in the app from the manufacturer.
Step 5: add an extra adapter
Do the powerline adapters in your starter pack not provide enough coverage? You can easily add an extra adapter later on. Choose an adapter from the same series as the adapters you've already set up. The setup is the same as that of the second adapter in the starter pack. In this case, you always have to connect the expansion to the base station by means of the 'sync' button. Press the button on the expansion first, then the one on the base station.
