How do you clean a car seat?

Car seats have to endure a lot with crumbs, ice cream stains, candy, and maybe even vomit. To enjoy the car seat for as long as possible and to transport your child hygienically, it's important to clean the car seat regularly. In this article, we explain how to clean your car seat.

Clean the car seat

Take the car seat out of the car

Choose a day when you don't need the car seat and take it out of the car. This makes it easier to reach.

  • Step 1: vacuum the car seat
  • Step 2: wash the car seat cover and shoulder pads
  • Step 3: clean the fixed parts

Step 1: vacuum the car seat

Vacuum the car seat

Remove all the crumbs from the car seat with a handheld vacuum. Does the car seat have several cushions? Remove them so you can vacuum the crumbs underneath. You'll most likely find crumbs of your child's snack next to the car seat as well. So make sure to vacuum around the car seat. This way, you can be sure that you don't miss a single crumb.

Step 2: wash the car seat cover and shoulder pads

Remove the car seat cover

Once you've vacuumed the car seat, remove the car seat cover and the shoulder pads. In the manual of your car seat, you can find which parts have a removable cover. The car seat cover and the shoulder pads can usually be cleaned in the washing machine. The exact instructions are on the washing label. Are you unable to clean the car seat cover? You may only replace the cover with an original cover from the brand of your car seat, or a summer cover.

Step 3: clean the fixed parts

Clean the parts of the car seat

Now that the cover is in the washing machine, it's time to clean the other parts. Parts that you can't remove the cover of, the seat belts, and the plastic and metal parts, for example. Clean those parts with a damp cloth or a soft sponge and mild soap. Don't use any aggressive cleaning agents such as bleach or something abrasive, that could damage the car seat. Dry the car seat with a dry cloth when you're done.

Step 4: dry it and place it back

Place the car seat in the car

After you've cleaned the car seat, wait for it to dry completely. Then, you can place it back in the car. Now, it's ready for the next adventure with your little one.
