What are parental controls on your router?
Block the internet after a certain time
Most modern routers have a function that switches off the internet after a certain time. This way, you ensure your child's phone or tablet doesn't connect to WiFi. Set that the WiFi for your daughter or son's devices is turned off after bedtime, for example. This solution won't affect you, because the router stops all internet traffic to a specific device. There is no way to work around this restriction. Make sure you don't accidentally switch off the WiFi of your own phone.
Block the internet during a certain period
Don't want your child to play with their mobile phone during dinner? Or do you want to ensure your son or daughter can't be distracted by the internet while they're doing homework? You can also switch off wireless internet for your children's devices during a certain period. This usually works in the same way as blocking internet access after a certain time. Keep in mind that you can also switch the internet back on at the desired time.
Prevent your children from changing settings
Is your son or daughter a bit more tech-savvy and do you expect them to figure out how to log in to the router? Set a good and strong password on your router. The default password is easy to guess or read from the sticker on the bottom of your router. With a good password, you prevent your child from changing the settings. If you have a smart router, this step is embedded, which requires you to log in with your own password.
