Expert review Sony A75K OLED TV

The A75K is one of the starter model OLED televisions by Sony from 2022. This television has a strong contrast, deep black levels, and a wide color gamut, which offers a realistic image. I visited Sony to test this. In this review, you can read what I think of this TV and I'll highlight the most important properties.

  • Thanks to the OLED screen, you can watch realistic images with deep black levels and natural colors.
  • The smart Cognitive Processor XR makes the image and audio even smoother and more realistic.
  • Via the Google TV smart platform, you can access all your favorite movies and series.
  • Because a subwoofer is missing, you can't listen to a deep bass during action movies with this TV, for example.

First impression of the Sony A75K

First impression of the Sony A75K OLED TV

In terms of design, the A75K doesn't really stand out between the other Sony televisions. The design is quite simple, but sleek and stylish. Just like all the other OLED TVs by Sony, I notice the realistic image right away. The colors are very detailed and the contrast is strong.

Realistic colors, good brightness

Brightness and colors of the Sony A75K OLED TV

Close-ups from fruits are displayed on the screen. I can see that the TV has a very wide color gamut. A strawberry isn't just red, but the display shows various subtle tones of red. In addition, the bright colors of the fruits aren't dull, but very vibrant. The image looks realistic because of this. The brightness of the TV doesn't let me down either. Even though the A75K isn't as bright as the new Sony A95K QD OLED TV, the image remains properly visible in a bright room.

Deep black levels and powerful contrast

Black levels and contrast of the Sony A75K OLED TV

An OLED screen has millions of pixels that all light up or dim individually. This makes a black part of the screen deep black. The advantage of this becomes really clear with an image of a white, shining necklace against a black background. The black is deep black, while necklace is bright and clear. This means that the TV has a strong contrast. I don't see a white glow around the necklace. This makes images with many dark parts very realistic.

Wide viewing angle, reflections every now and then

Because an OLED television doesn't have backlight and the pixels are located closely to the screen surface, the viewing angle of this kind of televisions is very good. When I sit at an angle, the contrast of the A75K barely changes either. This is an advantage if you like to watch TV with a larger group of people often, like a soccer game. Bright lights in the room cause reflections on the screen. As long as you don't point artificial light directly at the screen, you won't be bothered much by this.

Simple yet stylish design

Design of the Sony A75K OLED TV

The Sony A75K has a simple design. The screen stands on 2 thin leg stands that are barely visible when I sit right in front of the TV. Because an OLED screen doesn't have backlight, the screen of such a TV is always very thin. The A75K has a thin screen too. This allows me to hang the TV flat against the wall. Despite the simple design, I think the TV looks stylish and feels sturdy.

Decent sound for standard use

Sound of the Sony A75K OLED TV

The 4 speakers sound find when I watch regular TV, like a talkshow or the news. The A75K misses a subwoofer, so I barely hear bass tones. I mainly notice this during thrilling scenes in an action movie. The Acoustic Surface audio system ensures that the sound comes right out of the screen, which makes everything sound more spatial. I hear clearer stereo sound because the left speaker really produces the sound on the left of the image. The applause during a wedding sounds more detailed thanks to this.

Very easy in use

Remote and Google TV smart platform of the Sony A75K OLED TV

The quite large remote of the A75K feels very luxurious and comfortable in my hand. I can easily start Netflix YouTube, Disney+, or Amazon Prime Video with the shortcuts. I can also find these apps in the Google TV smart menu. This is a well-organized screen with a large selection of streaming apps, recommend movies and series, and information like the weather. I notice that the menu is quick to respond, which allows me to easily scroll through the installed apps.

Conclusion

The Sony A75K is a quite simple OLED television, but it doesn't compromise much when it comes to image quality. The starter model is less bright than the new QD-OLED TV, but the regular OLED screen ensures a strong contrast and has a realistic color representation. This makes the TV very suitable for watching movies and series with an impressive image quality. The sound is less suitable for this. That's why I'd recommend using an external soundbar for a richer sound.
