Expert review Samsung The Serif (2022)

The Samsung The Serif is a real designer television. The unique television is designed by the famous Bouroullec brothers. Aside from the modern, stand-alone design, the television also has a lot of noteworthy functions. For example, The Serif has a matte screen since this year. I visited Samsung to test The Serif for you. In this review, I'll highlight the most important properties and you can read my findings.

  • The TV is a stylish addition to your living room thanks to the stylish design of the Bouroullec brothers.
  • The matte screen reduces reflections, so you can watch TV even in bright sunlight.
  • Thanks to the 10-bit QLED screen, you can watch detailed images with rich colors.
  • Due to edge-lit local dimming, the black parts of the screen aren't always truly black.
  • You can't mount this TV to a wall.

First impression of The Serif

The Serif

The television is available in white, green, and dark blue. For this review, I tested the white version. I noticed the unique design of the television right away. The screen stands on 4 stylish metal leg stands. I also notice there aren't any cables hanging underneath the television. That's because 1 of the legs functions as a cable duct, which guides the power cord. Thanks to the magnetic cover on the back, all the connectors are hidden too.

Stylish and useful

Stylish The Serif

From the side, I notice that the television is designed in the shape of the capital 'i'. Thanks to this stylish design and flat top, there's room for a plant, photo frames, or other accessories. This allows you to integrate The Serif into your interior even more easily. The screen comes out even better on the industrial-looking, metal leg stands. The television is also set to eye level when you're sitting on a couch or chair thanks to the leg stands.

No longer a black screen

The Serif no black image

Thanks to the Ambient Mode, the design of The Serif comes out even better. When you're not watching television, you can display art pieces, photos, or other content on the screen. I can choose from a large assortment of paintings, specially made for The Serif. It's also possible to display useful information like the weather forecast or the news on the screen.

Sharp image quality, barely any reflections

The Serif image quality

The Serif has a 4K QLED screen. Thanks to this, I can see the images in sharp quality and with a strong contrast. I notice this directly when I watch demos with various art pieces in dark and bright colors. Compared to other QLED televisions, the contrast of The Serif isn't as strong. That's because of the number of individually illuminating LED lights in the screen. Thanks to the matte screen, I barely notice any reflections while watching a video. The image also looks more paper-like. This comes out best when you display a painting in Ambient Mode. The matte screen is a great advantage.

Stream music with NFC

The Serif NFC

The speakers of The Serif are good. The audio meets the requirements for television shows. A bass is missing, because the television doesn't have a built-in soundbar or subwoofer. I'd recommend you to purchase a soundbar for watching movies and series. But, The Serif has a very nice option. There's an NFC point on top of the television. If you place your mobile phone here while you play music, the television will play the song. That way, you can easily use The Serif as a wireless speaker.

User-friendliness

Remote Serif

The smart menu by Samsung has clearly been changed this year. First, the menu was a bar at the bottom of the screen, but it's not screen-filling. This allows me to easily navigate through all the options of the platform. On the left, there are 3 clear menus for 'Media', 'Games', and 'Ambient'. In the media menu, I select my favorite apps like Netflix and Disney+. I can also easily switch back to live television here. In the Ambient menu, I select what I want to display on the screen when I'm not watching television. The One Remote Control is a minimalist remote that feels very comfortable in my hand. The remote only has a few buttons, which makes it look organized. I can still navigate through the options on the screen easily.

The Serif does exactly what I expected it to do. The television is an eye-catching part of your interior thanks to the stylish design. The design comes out even better with the options of the Ambient Mode. The NFC wireless speaker option is a nice and practical addition. Thanks to the matte screen, you're barely bothered by annoying reflections and the art on your screen looks more realistic. In combination with the 4K QLED screen, you're ensured of sharp images with a strong contrast.
