Philips The One (58PUS8506) - Ambilight (2021)
- Thanks to the 10-bit panel, this TV lets you watch realistic and colorful HDR images.
- The Android TV operating system brings live television, apps, and Internet together in a clear overview.
- Ambilight illuminates the wall behind the TV in the colors of the image for a more comfortable viewing experience.
- The TV doesn't have a subwoofer, so the sound isn't rich and powerful.
First impression of the Philips The One
For this review, I test the 58-inch version of the Philips The One. The wide stand consists of 2 parts. I attach them with screws and attach the stand to the bottom of the TV. When I place the TV on the cabinet, I notice right away that the TV stands firmly. The setup of the TV is quick and easy. And I can easily open Netflix with the shortcut on the remote. I test the television with a nature documentary with Dolby Vision on Netflix.
Pretty high brightness and realistic colors
I can see right away that the brightness is very high. As a result, I don't see many reflections on the screen and bright colors are clearly visible. Even when I turn on the 'Movie' picture mode, the brightness is still surprisingly high. I see many color details and a bright color representation, especially when I watch Dolby Vision images. A brightly-colored fish is displayed very sharply, and the coral in the background also looks detailed and realistic.
Decent black levels and good dimming
The Philips The One has backlit local dimming. This means that the different zones of the backlight dim and light up individually. While it doesn't have as many zones as a Full Array or mini LED television, the dimming of the Philips The One works well. I don't see much glow around bright objects against a dark background, and the contrast is strong. In the nature documentary, I see a brightly-colored fish stand out from the black background.
Standard viewing angle
The screen of the The One is a VA screen. This is the most common television screen. While these screens perform well in terms of contract and color representation, the viewing angle is usually limited. This The One also has a standard viewing angle. When I sit to the left or right of the TV, the colors become duller and the contrast becomes lower. When I'm sitting in front of the TV on the couch, I don't notice that at all.
Simple, useful design
The design of the new The One looks about the same as that of the previous versions. A big advantage of this design is the rotatable stand. So you can easily turn the TV to your viewing position. When I turn the screen, I notice that I can do so fairly easily. The 70-inch and 76-inch versions of the Philips The One don't have a rotatable stand, they have 2 small leg stands. The border around the screen is matte gray, and the plastic back of the screen is black.
Ambilight reacts quickly
The Philips The One has Ambilight on the sides and top of the screen. This technology illuminates the wall behind the TV in the colors of the image. It's comfortable for your eyes and makes your viewing experience even better. I find that Ambilight is a bit distracting sometimes, especially during dark scenes in a movie. When I see black on the screen, the light has a light gray color. With more colorful videos, it has a very beautiful effect and smoothly changes colors with the image.
HDMI 2.1 connectors for gamers
The 20ms input lag of the Philips The One is pretty low and an advantage for gamers, but the HDMI 2.1 connectors complete your gaming experience. This means that you can use new technologies like Variable Refresh Rate, which ensures that the frame rate of your television is synchronized with that of your console. In addition, you also get 4K images with a 100Hz refresh rate. As a result, your games look razor-sharp and smooth.
Standard sound quality
The sound of the Philips The One comes from the 2 speakers with a total power output of 20W. These speakers provide a good sound when I watch regular TV, such as the news. The voice of the news anchor sounds clear. When I watch a movie or series or listen to music, I notice that the sound isn't very powerful. Because the TV doesn't have a subwoofer, I can hardly hear the bas.. That's why I recommend using a separate soundbar.
Pretty luxurious and nice remote
at first glance, the remote of the Philips The One looks luxurious. While this nice look consists mostly of plastic, the remote doesn't feel cheap. When I press the button, they click nicely. At the top the remote, there are buttons for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Rakuten TV. This way, you can open these apps extremely fast and stream your favorite series in no time.
Organized smart platform
The Android smart platform has a clear menu with streaming apps. The top row shows all the installed apps. The recommended movies and series are displayed below that. The full-screen menu looks clear. It also responds quickly, so I can smoothly scroll through it. In addition, Android has a large selection of apps. The most popular ones have already been installed. On the home screen, I see Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube right away.
Conclusion
The Philips The One is an affordable but versatile TV that mostly stands out in terms of image quality. The screen is very bright and has a high contrast. You can watch HDR content with lifelike colors, for example. A disadvantage is that the TV has a mediocre sound quality. Still, it's very suitable for regular use thanks to the good image quality, fast smart platform, and Ambilight.
