Expert review of the LG OLED EVO G3 TV

The design of the LG G3 is the most striking thing about the TV. That's because you can mount the thin TV very close to the wall. There's little space between the screen and the wall. But also notice the brightness of the screen right away. The TV truly is brighter than the other OLED TVs next to it. This makes the G3 stand out compared to LG's C3 and B3.

I can clearly see that the TV has a high brightness, especially with images with vibrant colors. The colors truly pop on the screen on an image with a lot of green paint. Still, the colors don't look too bright. I can still see all the subtle shades of green in the paint, and the transition to yellow paint looks natural. Another advantage of the brightness is that you're hardly bothered by reflections. Even in LG's very bright showroom, I can see the image clearly from most angles.

The high brightness also makes the contrast more powerful. Because the light paint in the foreground is so bright, the deep black in the background looks even darker. The OLED screen consists of millions of pixels that light up or dim individually. That's why I don't see a glow around bright parts of the image. This makes images look realistic and sharp.

In addition to the contrast, the wide viewing angle is also an advantage of OLED screens. When I stand in front of the G3 at a wide angle, I can see that the colors and contrast don't get worse. This allows you to watch a soccer match with a larger group, for example. That's because everyone can enjoy the same image quality.

The thin screen of the G3 contains as many as 6 speakers and 1 subwoofer. This provides a full and powerful sound. I notice this when I watch images from a racing game. When a car drives through a bend, I can clearly hear the bass of the engine. I can also hear that the sound goes from the right to left, according to the movement of the car. When I stand a little further away from the TV, the audio doesn't sound spatial. For room-filling sound, I recommend an external soundbar.

There's a cutout on the back of the G3 for the included wall mount. This means that this mount fits exactly onto the TV. This allows you to mount the G3 close to the wall. When I look at the side of the television, I can hardly see any space between the TV and the wall. The side is a light gray edge of brushed metal. This simple, but sleek design makes the G3 look stylish on the wall.

I can control the LG G3 with the familiar Magic Remote. When I point at the TV with this remote, a cursor appears on the screen. And when I move the Magic Remote, the cursor shifts and I can easily select options from the menu. I always have to get used to this remote control. Once I get the hang of it, I really like the controls. The bottom buttons on the remote are shortcuts to apps like Netflix and Disney+, so I can put on a movie in no time.

The webOS smart menu is an extensive menu with many downloaded apps. This gives me access to Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video right away. The menu responds very fast and apps start very quickly. The home screen shows a number of tiles that provide extra functions for certain usage situations. For example, I can open a gaming menu which lists relevant settings and connected gaming consoles. This way, you know exactly where the correct settings you need are.
