Expert review of the Hisense A90G OLED TV

With the A90G, Hisense offers an affordable OLED television once again. This time with a built-in soundbar. Thanks to the 10-bit OLED screen, you can watch natural and detailed images with this TV. In the meantime, the soundbar offers a powerful, rich, and spatial audio. With all of this, the Hisense A90G should be able to offer an immersive movie experience. In this review, I test the A90G and check if it meets my expectations.

  • The OLED screen ensures deep black levels and a powerful contrast.
  • Thanks to the built-in soundbar, you can listen to deeper bass tones and a clear sound.
  • The HDR support and the 10-bit screen ensure a very detailed color representation.
  • The VIDAA OS smart platform offers less settings and apps than extensive smart platforms.

First impression of the Hisense A90G

First impression of the Hisense A90G OLED TV

The Hisense A90G is clearly an eye-catcher. Instead of standing on visible leg stands, the screen leans on a wide soundbar. A weighted leg stand at the back of the TV provides extra reinforcement. This makes the TV stand sturdy on the TV cabinet. When I turn on the TV for the first time, I notice that it boots slowly. When I directly navigate to the smart menu, I notice that it responds a little faster. I start Netflix and start and action movie with Dolby Vision support.

Bright, detailed images

Brightness and colors of the Hisense A90G

Scenes that play during the day look very bright and lifelike. Especially in a movie with HDR support, I see various blue tones in a clear sky, for example. This makes the image look more realistic and detailed. I do notice that bright lights cause annoying reflections on my screen sometimes. The brightness comes out well in a poorly-lit room, but isn't bright enough in a brightly-lit room.

Powerful contrast and realistic shadows

The powerful contrast and deep black levels is where the OLED technique really stands out. Because every pixel has its own light source, black is really black. I also see lifelike shadows during night scenes on the A90G. A bright light of a car is displayed clearly, while the dark background remains dark. The 10-bit screen and the HDR support ensure a lot of color detail in shadows too. As a result, I see all the details of the action during dark scenes.

Excellent viewing angle

Viewing angle of the Hisense A90G OLED TV

Because the light source is located at the surface of the screen with OLED TVs, the viewing angle of these televisions is always very good. The A90G also has an excellent viewing angle. Even when I sit at an angle, the contrast and color representation of the TV stays lifelike. This is convenient if you like to watch TV with a large group of people during a sports match. That way, everybody will see the same image quality, even the ones who are sitting all the way on the edge of the couch.

Large casing with thin screen

Design of the Hisense A90G OLED TV

OLED televisions are known for their thin screens. But a TV does need some space for the equipment that does the thinking. That's why an OLED TV often has a thicker plastic casing on the back of the screen. With the Hisense A90G, I find it quite large. This makes the TV look less elegant than many other OLED TVs. The heavy leg stand also sticks out quite far on the back. I do think the soundbar, on which the screen leans and which sticks out on both sides, is a stylish alternative for a leg stand.

No HDMI 2.1 inputs for gamers

Connectors of the Hisense A90G OLED TV

On the back of the television, you'll see 4 HDMI inputs. But none of these connectors have the latest HDMI 2.1 version. Due to this, you can't game with the latest next-gen gaming techniques on the A90G. For example, you can't game with VRR images or 4K resolution and a 100Hz refresh rate. For gamers, this OLED TV offers a relatively low input lag of 20ms and a gaming mode, in which the TV optimizes the image for your gaming experience. That way, you can game with the lowest input lag and all the actions look smooth.

Good sound thanks to the built-in soundbar

Sound of the Hisense A90G OLED TV

Underneath the screen, there's a wide soundbar with 6 speakers. Thanks to this, the sound is directed at my listening position from right under the television. As a result, I feel like I'm in the middle of the action. Sound effects are very clear and rich, and I don't notice any distortion with a higher volume. There's a subwoofer located behind the television, under the plastic cover of the leg stand. This ensures a powerful bass. I mostly hear this during exciting action scenes with explosions, for example. These sound very realistic, powerful, and rich, which makes it seem like I'm actually in the movie.

Good smart platform

Smart platform VIDAA of the Hisense A90G OLED TV

The VIDAA smart platform by Hisense is a screen-filling main menu that has various apps displayed. I can easily navigate through the menu and notice it responds quite fast. The selection of apps on VIDAA is smaller than that of more common smart platforms. This menu doesn't support Disney+ yet. You will find common apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube on the home screen.

Thin, extensive remote

Remote of the Hisense A90G OLED TV

I control the A90G with a pretty long, silver remote. The panel with buttons is black. Even though the plastic remote doesn't look very luxurious, it's comfortable to hold and all the buttons are easy to reach. I also hear a soft click when I push one of the buttons. Under the black panel, there are 4 shortcuts to Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, and Rakuten TV. With this, you can start one of these apps with one press of a button.

Conclusion

4K (UHD) | Smart TV: basic platform | 100Hz

The 10-bit OLED screen of the Hisense A90G, ensures lifelike images with a lot of color details. The soundbar adds an impressive sound quality. Especially when you're looking for an affordable movie theater experience, the A90G is a suitable TV. The Hisense does sacrifice a bit on ease of use for that. The smart platform isn't as extensive as some other operating systems and the design of the TV and the remote aren't that luxurious.
