First impression of the LG G2
The first thing that stands out about the LG G2 is the minimalistic sleek design. This flat OLED TV of only 2.5cm deep hangs very flush to the wall. Because the G2 looks best on the wall, there's a special wall mount in the box. Don't you want to hang this elegant OLED TV on the wall, because you prefer your TV cabinet? The stands are sold separately.
Higher brightness than other OLED TVs
The G2 distinguishes itself from other OLED TVs by more than its design. The TV also has the LG OLED EVO panel. That means that the screen has a very high peak brightness of up to 30% more than the average OLED TV. When I watch HDR footage, I notice that the colors look very bright. White areas are very bright, but they don't hurt my eyes. I can also see subtle color differences in mixed paint, for example.
Very powerful contrast
The advantage of an OLED TV is that each pixel has its own light source. This way, a pixel can simply turn off when a part of the screen has to be black. In combination with the high brightness of the OLED EVO screen, the LG G2 also has a powerful contrast. That means the difference between the deepest black and the brightest white is very large. I can see this very well with images of waves under water. Shadows are deep black, and the reflections in the water are bright white.
Excellent viewing angle, little reflections
Because the light source of each pixel is close to the screen surface, you can always have the viewing angle of an OLED TV. The G2 also barely warps the image when I look at the TV from an angle. The contrast stays very big and the colors aren't muted. Thanks to the high brightness, I also don't see many reflections on the screen. Only very bright light causes reflections. When you use this TV in a living room with regular lighting, you'll probably barely notice it.
Sleek and striking design on the wall
With a 2.5cm thickness, the LG G2 is a real eye-catcher on the wall. When I look at the side of the TV, I really see how thin the TV is and how close it hangs to the wall. This way, the TV gives an organized impressions and it looks good in any modern interior. The back of the TV has cutouts for your cables, so they barely take up space behind the screen.
Decent sound for standard use
The LG G2 has 4 speakers and 2 subwoofers. This way, voices sound clear and I hear the deeper tones well. The subwoofers make sure you don't lose bass tones during an explosion in an action movie. The sound of the G2 is sufficient for regular use, but the speakers aren't good enough for a real home cinema experience. For a sound that really fills the room, I recommend to use a separate soundbar.
Organized menu that fills the screen
Last year, the WebOS smart platform got a big update. The menu now fills the screen instead of showing a row of tiles at the bottom. LG sticks to the smart menu that fills the screen this year. I think it's a big advantage. Because the menu now fills the screen, I have a better overview and I see all the apps right away. I also get suggestions for movies and series here. The menu responds quickly and I can easily scroll through the apps and suggestions.
Nice remote
The Magic Remote looks the same this year as the remote from last year. I think that's a good choice by LG, because the remote is comfortable to hold. When I aim the remote at the screen, I can see a cursor. I can control it by moving the Magic Remote. I have to get used to that. After I got the hang of it, the controls were easy to use.
Conclusion
The LG G2 offers an impressive image quality and a striking look. Are you looking for a stylish and minimalistic TV with a high-end display of your favorite movies and series? In that case, the G2 is a good choice, thanks to the OLED EVO screen, the included wall mount, and the sleek design. The sound quality is sufficient for regular use, but I recommend a separate soundbar for a complete experience.
